If you want to be invisible while browsing the forums, enter your profile (the My Profile link above)... at the bottom of the update screen is an option with wording similar to "Hide from Recent Visitors?"
Just hit yes rather than no. You'll be logged as a guest.
You should also notice that the thing is *NOT* real-time... The list may take around five minutes to update itself. Pounding on it won't make it update any faster.
You can view where a certain person has been in the past time period (currently set to one hour) by viewing their profile. Admins will get a few more goodies.

Holy Pughkeepsie Journal! There are names listed on the front page that I've never seen post here before! It's the Haunting of Flare by the Lurkers!
Seriously, though, this is kinda cool. It's gonna take a while for me to get used to it, however.

Ooh... I had no idea that so many people stopped by Flare in the space of only an hour. Very nice.
Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :
Has anyone looked at the details page yet?
Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :
Not that I particularly care that people see I'm on or in a place...but, uh...what's the feckin' POINT, G?
Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :
*looks at Details page* Jeepers! This is worse than BB (Big Brother) watching us, CC is watching us!
Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :
That's what I asked when I first started coding the thing. I didn't really see the point in the feature... Everyone else does it in such a way that you can only see who's been online recently, which in itself isn't really all that important.
We threw in a twist - visit the details page. You see a breakdown of where people visited, not just who was there.
That's the point.
Posted by Krenim (Member # 22) on :
After having looked at the details page, I must repeat myself: Ooh...

11% popularity? Intolerable!

I mean, what Veers said.

Charles, I have a request... is it possible to put the "just visted" list underneath the body of the page... cause, when I come here - the first thing I want to see is posts not who has dragged their muddy foot-prints through the forum. Then it's still there if I'm interested - it's just that it's not sticking in your eye at the top of every page. Plus It's more I have to scroll past to get to the meat and potatoes of the board.
Andrew
P.S. I think cable here in Australia might have finally got Trek right - before I go to bed I sit down to relax and catch Deep Space Nine. I get up and have breakfast infront of the Teev and get to watch Voyager! SUBLIME! Saturday evenings is TOS -> TNG -> Voyager -> DS9 -> Babylon 5 -> Starhunter (never really watched it).

Why are some names bolded and some not?
Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :
Because the names all lead to the profiles of those users. If the name is bolded, that means you haven't visited that person's profile since the last time you cleared your history folder. Those are not bolded mean that you have visited that person's profile recently.
Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :
Yes, it's possible to put it at the bottom, and I'll probably do so after this initial beta test.
Popularity is relative to the total number of people that have visited. Therefore, if 100 people have visited the board in total, but only 40 of them visited a single forum, that forum has a popularity rating of 40%.

Okay, I think I may have found a bug, Charles. Sometimes, when I go to a forum, the "Recent Viewers" box isn't there. When I click on the forum's link in location bar (like the one here says Flare Sci-Fi Forums -- Administration -- Incoming Hail -- Introducing Recent Visitors!), the forum refreshs and the "Recent Viewers" box appears. Also, if I'm in a forum and click on the Flare logo to go back to the forum summary page, the "Recent Viewers" box doesn't always appear. But if I click the logo again, the summary page refreshs and the box is there.
This doesn't happen all the time to. It's only happened about ten times thus far, and I can't find anything different that I'm doing here.
Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :
It will sometimes not appear if the part of the UBB you're visiting can't find a copy of the cached file... It's perfectly normal, but it shoudln't happen too often.
Don't go lookin' for it.

Wow, I must say I like this. It gives me a chance to know if somebody is online when I post a thread/reply that relates to them specifically.
I have a single, gripe, however, Charles. I notice that the Mod board and the UP3 board isn't included.
While I can see why the Mod board is not included, I would like to be able to see updates like this on the UP3 forum. If you can make this change, but you do not want non-contributors to view updates on these forums specifically, would it be possible to allow this feature to people whom have access to the contributor forum, like how mods have those "extra features" you previously mentioned?
Posted by Holodeck Corp (Member # 618) on :
Awesome implementation Charles!! Much better than WOL.
Posted by Charles Capps (Member # 9) on :
Right now, the system has no way to determine what is or is not a private forum. It's left up to the bits that control the HTML to figure that out.
Right now, the private forums only get the list of users recently there - the details page can not be generated safely. It will remain that way for at least the next few betas, until I can tie in private forum authentication with the display routines.

I was just reading this thread, then I hit the Go button below to get back to Incoming Hail. I got this error message:

I wiped the cookies off my pc recently so maybe that has something to do with it...

So ... why are some names bolded and some not? With respect to Siggy, I don't think he's right -- becuase I clicked on a lot of names (including my own), and a lot of people (including me ) are un-bolded. Eh?

You don't need to keep reporting it over and over, just say that you got it.
Unless it's a totally different error, of course.

Look on the bright side, Charles. That error isn't happening to everyone. Other than initially having a problem with the Recent Visitors box appearing, it's worked great for me. And, on another positive, maybe this will encourage some of our lurking members to actually join the fun. I mean, we can see y'all now. You might as well say something, for Wotan's sake!

I don't think this is a bug in the traditional sense, Charles, but today all the threads are bolded, as if I had never clicked on any of them. Nothing else has reset itself, though. My "new posts since last visit" markers are still up to date.
