The object of this exercise is to extoll the virtues of any country other than your own. You may only mention your country to identify it.

Participation is mandatory.

Example:

I am from the U.S.A.

I like Germany because I spent 2 years there, learning that beer and wine weren't just foul-tasting fluids you tolerated so you could get drunk, but tasty additions to any meal. I also liked Oktoberfest and the Christmas Festivals and wish they had them here. Authentic ones, that is.

England has a wealth of things I like. Fish & chips with malt vinegar & salt is the least of these national treasures. A lot of the people I've met on these forums are from there. Many of my favorite authors come from there, such as C.S. Lewis, Arthur C. Clarke, and Henry Fielding (author of THE HISTORY OF TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING, the first modern work of humor I know of).

France is the home of fine quisine, and philistine that I am, I like the plainest of French fare: bread. My favorite novel (The Three Musketeers) was written by a Frenchman (alas! His name escapes me for the moment). Many of aviation's pioneers were frenchmen, as well, and don't forget, the man-carrying baloon was invented in France. <edit>Doh! It was Alexandre Dumas, who was not only French, but Black.</edit>

Canada? Second city T.V., John Candy, Molsen beer, Moosehead (and the list goes on and on).

Get the idea?

A warning to the Americans here: I hereby request that any response that touts the virtues of one's own nation, or denigrates someone else's, be edited to remove the offending remarks.

Thank you.

I love Scotland.
The people are friendly (despite the dour Scotsman stereotype), and the scenery is breathtaking. The castles are fabulous, even the ruined ones haunt the eye.

Scotland gave us:
Nessie
Argyle
Sean Connery
MacBeth
Rob Roy
William Wallace
Boadicea / Boudikka
Golf
Scotch
Rolled 'R's
Oatmeal
Scones
"The Highlander" (even if neither of the guys who play the McLeods are actually Scots...)
The Claymore
Kilts
Montgomery Scott
etc.

And, of course, my ancestors.

Ireland.

Besides the fact that i'm practically native Irish, this country has alot of other cool things about it:

The entire place is green.
The Cliffs of Moher (BEAUTIFUL landmark)
"Irish Silk"
Tweed
Waterford Crystal
Beautiful knit sweaters.
Puhkas and the little people
U2
Connemara Marble
Cloddagh rings (one of wich I wear all the time)
Great folklore
Gaelic
Clannadh came from there, and so did Enya
Those awesome accents
They are extremely down to earth, practical, fight for what they believe in, and know how to get drunk and have a good time. But they dont' abuse that.. they're very righteous and friendly.
Druidism, Paganism, and etc (actually born in England, but oh well).
The Tara Broach
And whole bunches of other really cool stuff.

Well lessee:

Ireland:
The colour green, like in everything
The colour orange, for everything else that's protestant.
U2, the best rock group ever (As aforementioned, I have all the CD's and videos)
Irish creme, the best liquor in the world. (Cement mixer- 1 shot Bailey's, 1 shot lime juice, swirl in mouth until thick, then swallow.)
The second best accent in the world.

Scotland:
Shetland ponies (Though I'm afraid of riding horses, my fiancee loves them.
The ability to be happy and mad in the same scentence ("I really am happy that you came, BUT YOU SHOULD'VE WIPED YOUR FEET!!!!)
Sean Connery, the sexiest man in the world (If I was a woman or gay, I'd go for him in a minute. Elsewise, this is my fiancee's comment.)
The Best accent in the world.

England:
Big Ben
Parliament.
Monty Python.

Germany:
Excellent beer. Need I say more???

Australia:
Mel Gibson (Fiancee-the second most sexy man in the world)

Japan:
The best animation in the world (DBZ, Sailor Moon, Akira, Ranma, and most of everything I grew up with.)

China:
Hey, everyone likes chinese food, right???

Canada:
First of all, Excellent beer. Even better that it's not half a world away as much as less than an hour away.
Excellent comedy: John Candy(Everybody says I look like him), Mike Myers, and a few others whom I can't remember their names right now.
Excellent hockey: Well hockey is from Canada, isn't it???
A real decent version of football that we can watch in the spring (CFL)
Niagra Falls: I go through there on my way to Connecticut every year. It's still cool no matter how many times I go.
And last but not least: DUTY FREE!!!

------------------
Saving the world: $50.
Saving the universe: $1,000,000
Saving your marraige: Sorry, I don't do that.

Australia: the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Center, the Top End, koala "bears" and kangaroos

Kenya: grasslands to the horizon, lions, giraffe, zebra, hippos, great flocks of white birds swooping down on watering holes

Japan: koi ponds, rock gardens, cherry blossoms, every craft or hobby elevated to art form.

Sumatra: jungle so dense, so green, so little known. {there might be a previously unknown bipedal ape species hiding there.}

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Pony trekking or camping,
Or just watching TV.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
It's the country for me.

You're so near to Russia,
So far from Japan,
Quite a long way from Cairo,
Lots of miles from Vietnam.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Eating breakfast or dinner,
Or snack lunch in the hall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

You're so sadly neglected
And often ignored,
A poor second to Belgium,
When going abroad.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

Finland has it all.

Nah, we're too busy talking about countries that are winners. . . like, for instance, North Vietnam. 8)

But seriously: India. And especially Kashmir. I can't actually find the words to describe it. We should never have given it up, never. . .
