Argh. My Windows CD Player has this funny idiosyncracy now. I'm the kinda geek who puts in all the CD info into the computer so I can quick look at it when coding them up; all the information--the artist name, CD name, track titles--gets stored in a file called CDPLAYER.INI which resides in the main Windows directory. I bought a whole bunch of new CDs (surprise, surprise)and of course put them in the computer.

Or so I thought.

The other day, I threw in my James Darren CD; the player came up as "New Artist." Huh? Shrug and retype it. But there was a ticking nag at the back of the head to test it. Eject the CD and then put it back in.

"New Artist." Damn.

I looked at the CDPLAYER.INI file contents. It simply wouldn't store anymore and the file size stopped at a very computerlike 64 KB. So I thought that maybe there's a file limitation size, but no one I've talked to has been able to find anything about it. I removed the CD Player program and reinstalled it. No luck.

Had to burn up ten sampler CDs for my housemate Kim on Sunday, so when I finished, I spent two hours typing inthe info for twentyfive CDs that never made it into the INI file on my roommate's computer. Afterwards I compiled them in with the ones I already had and transferred it to mine. The filesize was now 77.7 KB.

STILL didn't work. DAMMIT!!

So now I'm very annoyed. I even went so far as to DL WinAmp--and I HATE WinAmp. I don't like the way it works, especially for CDs. Now this means I need to keep the case nearby. That sucks. More clutter. Bitchmoanwhine.

So. Is there a way to defeat this 64KB filesize limitation or am I just above the proverbial estuary sans a means of locomotion?

I think it depends on which operating system you are using. Some OSes allow you to automatically look this up on the internet.

I don't know why you hate Winamp, it is far superior to any player out there, especially the Windoze one. It comes equipped with CDDB lookup so you won't have a problem with the CDs if you use Winamp. And if you are talking about the way that the visualisations don't work with CDs there is a plug in for that which makes them work. I personally use Winamp 3 Alpha 5, which although it has some bugs(still an alpha) it blows all the competition away(even the 2X Winamp which is the current full realease).

Personally, I hate WinAmp because it took over, then fried, all my associations. I don't WANT to use WinAmp to open WAV files. I have a better program for that. Anyway, I uninstalled it, deleted every last remnant, and it STILL thinks that .wav files are associated with WinAmp, even though there's not a file on the drive that contains that information. The association can't be deleted, because it doesn't exist! ARGH!

'Course, this is also a problem with Windows itself.

Shik: Did you make certain that INI file didn't somehow get switched to "read-only"?

As for Winamp associations, reinstall it, go to Options -> Preferences -> Setup -> File types, and deselect the ones you don't want associated w/ Winamp. That's what I did to stop WAV files from opening there. I was tired of having to reopen my MP3 playlist after every time I played a WAV.

I'm fairly sure that it didn't get switched, Tim, but I shall examine when I get home. (I'm at the library printing out more CD art)

Infinity: The CDDB IS nice, yes--especially since it gave me the full Japanese titles to those undecipherable tracks on all my anime CDs. But it doesn't autoload that track information when you put in a new CD; it wants you to "create a new playlist. Fuck that. I want to throw in X Japan & have it immediately tell me I'm listening to "20th Century Boy" or that I've just switched to my Jet Grind Radio sampler. There's also the fact that it doesn't have that handy eject button on it like the Windows CD Player does. It's a pain in the ass to move my body down to hit the small CD button (or Kaja knows ANOTHER button..say POWER). It why I have a trackball instead of a mouse. Movement is annoying.

OK, just checked & it's not read-only.

Hey, here's a lark. Let's ask Microsoft support!

Why do I hear Rykja laughing in my head?

I personally use Sonique 1.90. Can't wait for v2 to come out... Anyhoo, I use Window's CD Player for playing CD's, seeing as where I have the controls right on my keyboard...

Sonique is okay, but it's playlist is below ****, and since I have lots of mp3s it is completely uselless for me. It looks fancy, but there is still not enough usefull options on it. And I've used Winamp since forever, and I miss my full screen plug-ins.
