I finally managed to get a decent computer for myself. Cost me a bundle though. I managed to save costs by moving components from the old computer to the new one and putting it together on my own. And it works completely.

Here it is:

AMD Thunderbird 850 MHz (might upgrade to 1.2 GHz at a later date)
ECS Motherboard K7VMA with sound and modem. It also has an internal Savage 3D accelerator, and an external AGP which can support other video cards. In the event that I get one of those Voodoo cards or whatever, I just need to turn the internal AGP off.
4 PCI slots along with that AGP slot, rather than most other integrated motherboards, which only contain two PCI slots and NO AGP slot. I think 4 is a good number, don't think I'll be using that many slots in the future, probably two or three.
128 MB PC-133 RAM.
Two hard drives, a 20 GB and a 1.6 GB, both from my old computer. The 20 GB is the primary master, and is removable for school purposes. The secondary master, a 1.6 GB also has Windows 98 on it, and I save all my work on that drive in case my primary master goes kaput.
24x CD-Rom. Generic, but it will do. Also from the old computer.

WHOO HOO!!!! NEW TOY!!!

That's a good machine. I wouldn't look for a Voodoo-card though, they're gone now, and the last cards they released were shite. I'd wait a while and then buy a GeForce 3, it'll be worth it.

Not bad. I keep thinking about gutting my home PC and starting from scratch - new motherboard, chip, extra memory (I'm already up to 128 Meg as it is, though), new graphics card, maybe a DVD drive (my objections to the format notwithstanding). . . probably some other stuff I'll need to.

Thing is, right now I don't need it. I only use it to surf the net anyway, and it's been well maintained over the last 4 years. Plus, as that idiot DT is quick to point out, I fix computers for a living - I don't want to spend my spare time rootling in the innards of one. So I'll probably just get a laptop. . .

But the procedure went OK, with no probs at all? Interesting.

Vogon: I took a small course in computer hardware basics, and assembled a few computers as part of the lessons. But these were second hand, used-and-abused AT computers with as much as a 233 MHz processor and 64 MB of RAM. That's nothing compared to assembling such brand new hardware fresh out of its electrostatic wrapping.

Likely, Jeff, but I don't have a land line at my place of residence.

Nimrod: Yes, I plan to get a few new games that I've been dying to play. Freespace, Rainbow Six, and some others.

Nice... I just need to do a few minor upgrades myself, faster processor and larger video card.
Having 666 mhz for a processor speed is evil- literally.

I traded my PII-450 for a PIII-450 at work, it still holds its own. My Geforce card does make it easier, of course.
The only game that is challenging, performancewise, is "RealMyst", but it's slow on a 1.2 GHz as well, so many polygons...

Not bad. A few months ago I replaced my old 486 which had 50MHz, 500MB harddrive (upgraded to 2GB), and 16MB RAM.

My current system is a HP Pavilion 7850.
-933MHz PIII
-128MB 133MHz SDRAM
-40GB harddrive
-48X CD-ROM drive
-4X CD-RW drive
-External USB 100MB Zip drive
-17in monitor
$1,250

We keep talking about getting a hub so I can connect it to our internet cable service. Right now I'm having to use the 56K modem it came with.
