It looks like Toys for Bob, the company of the makers of Star Control One and Two, is considering the creation of a new Star Control game. They have requested E-mails to generate support with their parent company (even I, for such an important cause, put my lazyness aside to send a short E-mail ).
More information can be found here together with more links.
For those who don't know what Star Control is, the second game is avalible here for free. Basically, it is a very high-quality space exploration/adventure/combat game.

YES! Another Star Control fan! I'm looking to buy an old Genesis for ST1 right now!
The only drawback with the 3do's Star Control 2 was that it did not have the chesslike game of the first game.
I've seriously considered making models of some of those amazing (knock-off from sci-fi) ships the game uses.
There was a Star Control 3, BTW, it just was really late in it's release and so was outdated and flopped hard when it finally was available.
ST3 explains what happened to the Precursors.

Captain Boh, Star Control 3 is probably a so-so game taken by itself, but it pales in comparison with Star Control 2. This is probably because it was made by a different set of designers. If you liked SC3, then you should definitely try SC2 if you have the time.
Jason, there are emulators avalible for Genesis and Star Control 1. I wonder if it's legal to use those things if you purchased the Genesis and game, but subsequently lost them... Also, there seem to be some fairly good pictures at the Pages of Now and Forever site for ships and such. http://starcontrol.classicgaming.gamespy.com/fan/3drender.shtml

I've never heard of Star Control. The Space strategy games I never really got into. I've played MOO2 and MOO3 a bit, a little Galactic Civilizations, There's a sequel out now. And Rebellion and Empire at War.

ST2 not so much "strategy" as it is about exploring, making contacts and building ships in a panic before the aliens that enslaved the Earth (and it's allies) notice what you're doing.
Meanwhile, said evil aliens (the Ur-Quan) have a civil war on their hands and it's either a choice between eternal slavery or facing the (much more powerful) nihilistic Kor-Ah.
One thing that makes the game so cool is that the aliens are almost never humanoid in appearance.

Well, that and it's utterly warped sense of humor. I also loved the music they created for each of the races.
Personally, I liked going into Melee mode with a fleet of Spathi ships with the "B.U.T.T." missiles. I found I could easily defeat the Kor-Ah (black ships) with those. I've got the PC version on my computer now and using DOS Box to run it.

The little "rhino" guys with their afterburner ships are the best- I can wipe out even a ChHurmm battleship with that little dinky thing.

Bah! Everyone knowns that the Umgah is the best ship in the game because it has the invincible antimatter cone of destruction. Also, the Umgah have extra eyes and stomachs, which is always a plus in my book. The Mmrnmhrm X-form is probably the best balanced ship, though. I think both the Chenjesu and Mmrnmhrm were better before they merged, though it takes more skill to use the earlier ships. Fwiffo is definitely useful for the final battle, mercilessly slaughtering the Ur-Quan like so many pigs (once I completed it without losing a single crew...murhahaha), and for dealing with those damned probes (Spathi vs. probe battles look like some sort of farting tango dance thing...). Both the Umgah and Spathi are less powerful in Timewarp. I think it gets the B.U.T.T. missile range wrong, and the antimatter cone isn't all destroying. Otherwise, it's much better for melee then reguloar SC2.
Chenjesu + Precursor control jets = unstoppable killing machine.

You call yourself a Star Control fan and don't even know what Timewarp is? Shame on you! http://timewarp.sourceforge.net/ I have 0.06u1 (the u1 is the patch), which is stable after the initial string of crashes (from setting of preferences) and after taking out the unstable ships (the Gaia is one, but I forget the others...). Overall, it's very good!
