Fellow Canadians:

Do any of you know of a good company that will sell auto insurance at a decent price? I will be getting a car soon, and as a first time driver, I will need to ensure that I keep my auto rates as low as possible.

So far, I've compared auto insurance rates from four separate companies. Out of these four, the lowest quote obtained is $3,500 per year. I'd like to cut that as low as possible, though I do have several strikes against me: 1) I'm male, and 2) this is my first car, 3) I have not held any form of auto insurance in the last three years.

The car itself is a 96 Pontiac Sunfire, with over 300,000 kilometers against it. So the car is pretty much a writeoff anyway, but I'd like to find ways to ensure my insurance is as low as possible.

Thanks.

Get someone else to insure it and be a named driver?

And surely "car insurance" makes more sense?

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

I think you are pretty much screwed for the first 6 months because you have never had insurance. What I did after my wife got her licience was get 6 months of insurance and then got another policy, the next one dropped in half and six months later got another policy which dropped in half again. Even if you get a year policy and cancel after six months you should be able to do this.

Eric, just be thankful you're not in the Maritimes, or else you'd be paying a hell of a lot more money. But to keep insurance low, drive a four-door car, with a 4-cylinder engine, and any colour but red. Also, the older the car, the cheaper the insurance.

Why not red?
I heard red was best because people saw you more clearly than if you're white or grey.
Is that wrong now?

Red is considered a "sporty" color, since most people buy supercars and sportscars and such in that color. So people with red cars are supposedly more likely to act like they're race car drivers or something.

Yellow would come second.

Auto/Car insurance, anywhere, is pricey, especially if you are a first time driver or have had you insurance lapse for any reason.

Cops are prone to watch the red cars more than any other color, meaning that they get pulled over more often, making it look like the drivers of red cars are worse than any other color. Which may or may not be true. I showed my insurance agent my red sports car, a Buick Skyhawk T-Type 2 Door. After seeing the car she got the insurance $10.00 per month lower, since it was in no shape to be much more than struggling along....

There are a few explanations as to why red cars apaprently get pulled over more.

One is that traffic police, when bored, like to play "Traffic Snooker". So they'd have to pull over a red car, and they'd get a point. Then they'd have to pull over a "colour". If they get a yellow car, they'd get 2 points, and if they pulled over a black car, they'd get 7 points. Obviously, they'd avoid white cars or they'd lose points.

The alternative crazy reason is that there are more red cars than other cars, and statistically, one colour does have to be pulled over more than others. But that's just crazy talk.
