A juvenile? Yeah didn't look as big as I was expecting - wasn't there footage of a REALLY large one from earlier in the year?
Not really something the size that could pull ships into the ocean!!
It's eye was weird - well looked sort of comic-book - large black centre and white around it.
They say that octopuses and smaller squid are quite intelligent - moving their way through mazes etc. I wonder how intelligent the giant squids are?
The Japanese man pulling it on board sounded more like he was thinking about how he could cook it up. Iron Chef style!

They did catch seven live adolescents recently, of the biggest kind of squid, they kept them for study. Didn't live long in captivity, though. Also, CNN does bad research. Giant Squid are not the largest kind, Colossal Squid is.

I thought they hadn't proved the existence of the colossal squid (yet)...

I think they did through implication, that is by measuring sucker scars found on sperm whales and squid beaks found in their stomachs then extrapolated from there.
Though I may be misremembering.

Oh they've found colossal squids alright, there are pics in the wikipedia entry. They're distinguished by the larger proportions of their bodysize and by the special arrangements of suckers and barbs on the tentacles.

Well maybe they are more intelligent and aren't easily captured?
