I'm curious as what people are running these days, as cody has his modem survey.

Mine's a:
266 mmx
64 RAM
32x CD ROM
4.2gig HDD
56k modem, when I'm not using my ethernet card
state-of-the-art video card
Sound Blaster
15in monitor

Anyone else care to brag/whimper?

I've got a:

Pentium 200 MMX
32 mb Ram
24x CD Rom (I think)
1.9 gig HDD
56k modem
(don't know what video card I have)
Sound blaster 16
17in monitor
No 3D card

The newer games run shakily on this system, but my Internet connection is acceptable.

Well, here's the description for the computer that I'm not using yet, but will be soon, because it's simpler. (The description, not the computer. Though in retrospect...)

PII 400.
32 MB RAM
The name of the motherboard escapes me at the moment...
A Soundblaster clone ripped out of an aging 486. No drivers means it doesn't exactly work, but it makes the back feel less lonely, until I replace it with something better. And louder!
Generic video card. Adequate, but soon to be replaced by an elegant 2D/3D solution.
No speakers. Yet. (Well, there's a pair of cheap ones which came with the aforementioned 486, but I can't use them anyway, so...)
No monitor. I've got a smallish burnt out Packard Bell model, which buzzes and smokes, but lets me set up the BIOS, so it isn't a total loss.
6X CD drive, also cannibalized. It too is merely filling a slot for its soon to arrive DVD descendant.
No modem yet.
The operating system? Why, what else could I really put on such a machine without feeling guilty? DOS 6.2, of course.

I enjoyed playing WarCraft II on this one. For one, it's a bit...fast. For another, in the setup screen, it lists the CPU as "486 or better." Damn straight!

AMD K-6 233 MMX
64 Mb SDRAM
8 Gig Quantum Fireball UDMA
4 Gig Quantum Bigfoot
32x CD-ROM
External Zipdrive
Soundblaster AWE 64 soundcard
16 Meg VooDoo2 full videocard (no add-on)
2 40 Watt speakers
Wingman Extreme Digital joystick
3 button trackball with scrollwheel
And I still have my old 14" monitor from my 386, which can handle 1024x768 without a problem.

And yes, I don't have an internet connection (yet). I use the computers at school (which can get upto 60 kb/sec download speed ).

Computers at school:
P2 450
NT 4
128 Mb SDRAM
several Gigs free diskspace
32x CD-ROM
Internal Zipdrive
17" monitor
mouse with scrollwheel

or:
Sun Ultra 10
Unix
at least 128 MB RAM (I don't know how much it really is, I've heard rumors of 300+)
17" monitor

Sol: get more RAM. No question. 64 or 128 Mb. . .

Mine (well, the home one anyway):

200 MMX
64 Mb RAM
6.4 + 3.2 Gb HDs
24x CD-ROM
56K (but w95 thinks it's a 33.6)
17" monitor
God only knows what the graphics card is, but I think it's only a 2 Mb jobby. . .
Soundcard? Er. . . recently upgraded it with software that emulates a Soundblaster, anyway. . .

I bought mine a couple of years ago, so it's ancient. I can't upgrade it at the moment because as a student, I'm on a tight budget.

Pentium 133
Quad speed CD(I said it was ancient didn't I)
32 MB RAM
850MB HD
Soundblaster
Video Card(dunno which one)
15"Monitor

They upgrade 20% of the machines here at the office every year, and we get the hand me downs. I got a better hand down then some of the others last year, so it will be another year before I go up again.

I just happened to get a new computer two weeks ago, so here it is:

Apple Blue/White G3
350 MHz PowerPC 750 (1 MB cache, 100 MHz bus)
128 MB RAM
6 GB Quantum Fireball EX UltaATA HD
9.1 GB Seagate Barracuda Ultra/Wide SCSI HD
4.3x DVD-ROM (32x CD)
ATA Zip drive
128-bit ATI card (made for Apple; using the latest Rage chipset) with 16 MB RAM
ixTV tuner/digitiser
Steath Serial port (so I can connect my camera and photo printer)
Sony sfII 17in montior
Built-in sound; no worrying about extra cards.
Agfa 1212u USB scanner
Built-in Firewire! (Now, then, about all those Firewire devices I'm supposed to be able to get...)
No floppy drive!
No modem!

Here is a picture of it. Ignore the gaping hole in the front; the blue Zip bezels are in short supply, but should be available soon.

My computer was new in December 1996

Pentium P100 (I opened the case. I know these things.)
Some kind of video card that allows only 256 colors at 1024x768 (So I stay at 800x600 and true colors.
4x CDrom
1.2G HDD (Running compression software to hold roughly 2 gigs)
3.5" floppy
Sound Blaster (clone)
33.6k modem (Upgraded from original 14.4)
32megs RAM (Upgraded from 16)

please don't laugh:

Intel 233MHz with MMX
Windows 95
13.9" viewable monitor
4GB hard drive (I paid for the upgrade)
1.44 MB 3.5" diskette drive
13x min / 32x max CD-ROM drive
Ensoniq Wavetable sound card (good? bad?)
Altec Lansing speakers
second cheapest joystick in the store
built-in Telepath modem

and I still have no idea how to get things done

My work one:

HP Brio (*sob*) PII 350 MHz
8 Gb HD
64 Mb RAM
Crummy CD-ROM out of my old Compaq DeskPro I had before
17" monitor
Similar soundcard I have at home - because it's a spare I brought from home (only one in the company with a soundcard!)
Typhoon speakers nicked off a Brio in the training room

Our computers here at uni had been running on Windows 3.11 for the last few years until today when they've finally upgraded the computer system and guess what they've upgraded to, yes people, it's Windows NT. Now we needed this upgrade, but what I want to know is why they couldn't have waited for another few months because I'm sure that there will be something new and even better coming out in the new milennium.

This is a good university for everything else, but as far as the IT services go, they're all living in the past with no imagination or initiative at all. Grrrr

OK, that's my rant for the day.

Well, for what it's worth, I'm battering this out on one of my department's Panrix bangers. I think it has a 200MHz Pentium, but all external stickers and info are missing.

It does have a 15" monitor, and runs Win95.

It also has a layer of grey grime seared onto all the keys. One's fingertips get sticky....ewwwwww yuk.
