Yay, I finally got a Zip drive! 100 MB of space! So yesterday, I was transferring all my .jpeg's from my old floppies directly onto the new disk... And at just over 14 MB, the thing STOPPED and said it "can't create file or directories" anymore? What gives? Is it the USB zip drive? Those are supposed to be pretty cool. Unfortunately I don't know much about zip drives, could it be that weird click of death bug that people keep talking about? *shrugg*------------------ Game over man, game over! - Marine(Aliens)

My first Zip died via the Click of Death and nearly took a disk with it.DOS limits the number of files that can be placed in one directory in certain variations of the filesystem - be sure not all your files are in the same directory. *L* ------------------ Charles Capps Chief Administrator, the solareclipse network "I do whatever the voices in my head tell me to do."

Yup yup. The disks are seperated into different clumps... you gotta save into a new clump. *LOL**can you tell i'm not a tecchie?* ------------------ "Nothing can be altered, there is nothing to decide No escape, no change of heart, no anyplace to hide You are all I'll ever want, but this I am denied Sometimes in my darkest thoughts, I wish I'd never learned What it is to be in love and have that love returned"

What possible moronic reason could they have for limiting the number of files in a directory?------------------ "Imagine all the people, living life in peace..." -John Lennon, "Imagine"

Well, turns out that's exactly what it was. Stupid to limit, if you ask me.When I created folders and started saving to them as well, the problem cleared up. Thankx.

I think it's how the disk is made... it's made with different sections. *shrugs*.. My graphics teacher told me why at one point, but I was too busy teaching the other students how to use Adobe Photoshop at the time. *LOL*------------------ "Nothing can be altered, there is nothing to decide No escape, no change of heart, no anyplace to hide You are all I'll ever want, but this I am denied Sometimes in my darkest thoughts, I wish I'd never learned What it is to be in love and have that love returned"

Frank, you are too kind. In such situations, I always remark (in a STAGE WHISPER) that since that person's handicap does not appear to be physical...Do ya get my drift? ------------------ "There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home." --Ken Olson, president, chairman and founder of Digital Equipment Corp., 1977 www.geocities.com/Area51/Shire/8641/ [This message has been edited by Baloo (edited July 05, 1999).]

Limiting the number of files in the root directory may simply be a convenience thing harking back to DOS. To demonstrate go to the windows directory using DOS prompt and type "dir" or "tree" Imagine how bad it would be if the number of files was not limited back yonder. ------------------ Game over man, game over! - Marine(Aliens)

If you think that is a lot of files type "Dir/s".I sure that it has something to do with how DOS started. O well I have cable modem so, I laugh a everyone who has a slower connection than me, other that people with bad connections.

If only we could limit the files in a directory here at work. Recently we migrated from a Document Processing System (that uses a database to remember where files are, and has templates and diaries and suchlike) based around WordPerfect 5.1 (I kid you not) to one using Word 97. But first we roll out Word, and people start using it to look into their directories where they have said thousands of files. Now, you try uising Open in Word to look into a directory like that - WITH THE PREVIEW PANE OPEN. Chaos, absolute chaos. . .

Okay, here's a word of advice. If you were going to try typing what CC pointed out there... don't. It's, um... rather long... :-)------------------ "Imagine all the people, living life in peace..." -John Lennon, "Imagine"
