Actually this depends, on a Star Ship yes that's purely stupid a massive writers error, however on the ground if energy weapons are used this is highly logical (ballitic weapons travel in a curve thus allowing them to fire out of visual range and over the hozion, however since energy weapons generally only travel in a straight line over the hozion shots are impossible.

Actually that makes sense, if you loose artifical gravity and you ship is going lets say 10,000m/s at the time of the lose of gravity you will accelarate for 9.8m/s^2 to what ever speed you are going. This massive near instantous accelaration will continue until, a.) you reach the top speed (unlikely), b.) or until you hit a wall (likely), will most likely turn you into a wet spot on the wall, think about it .
