....... who IS "They must be Giants"?Honestly, the first time I've heard about them is in these forums. Before that, all I've paid attention to is U2. Someone answer these questions: 1) Who are the members? 2) How long have they been in existence? 3) Have they ever had a concert here in Toronto? Ontario? Canada? 4) Have they won any Grammys? 5) Were they in any movie soundtracks? 6) Who came up with that name? ------------------ I can resist anything....... Except Temptation

I will answer these to the best of my ability until Sol arrives to save you from sorrow, Tahna.1) John and John. Officially. 2) Err... Since the 80s sometime... I think. 3) Possibly. 4) No clue. But they deserve them. All of them. 5) Yes. Quite a few. I think the new Austin Powers movie's credits sequence being one of many, but I'm not entirely sure. 6) It's from the Bible somewhere. Something about the guys on the other side of the river possibly being giants. Or at least that's the only theory I can remember. ------------------ Elim Garak: "Oh, it's just Garak. Plain, simple Garak. Now, good day to you, Doctor. I'm so glad to have made such an... interesting new friend today." (DS9: "Past Prologue")

Oh my! And he said "They Must Be Giants!" Egads! It's "They Might Be Giants," by the way. ------------------ Elim Garak: "Oh, it's just Garak. Plain, simple Garak. Now, good day to you, Doctor. It for this reason that I was born.First of all, your name isn't Gloria by any chance, is it? 1.) They Might Be Giants are John Linnell and John Flansburgh. Since the early nineties, they have incorporated a full band made up of various guest musicians. 2.) Linnell and Flansburgh have been writing songs together since high school, long ago. They did not form a band together until 1984. 3.) While my knowledge of the band is extensive, I do not have every concert (well over 1,000) venue memorized. 4.) God no. The Grammys are to good music what a sewer is to fine wine. 5.) Yes. Some good, some bad. Most recently, the song "Dr. Evil" was used in the movie Austin Powers 2. Look for the second soundtrack in stores...um...soon! Before that, the song "Spiraling Shape" appeared in the Kids in the Hall movie Brain Candy. Before that, the song "Sensurround" appeared in the regretable Power Rangers movie. Even before that, their songs had appeared on at least one movie...described most notably as "unconventional". It's title escapes me. Also, They Might Be Giants (TMBG) currently appear in the ABC science miniseries Brave New World on Thursday nights at 10:00 PM Eastern time. Catch it if you can. 6.) A question of much contention. The Johns were looking for a name that was "outward looking and paranoid". The most recent explanation is that it was borrowed from a friend of theirs who took it from a movie made in 1971 called They Might Be Giants, starring George C. Scott as a man who thought he was Sherlock Holmes. The movie itself was a modern retelling of Don Quixote. The title, of course, is an answer to the question "Why tilt at windmills?". So, who came up with the name? Cervantes, ultimately. For a good testing of the TMBG sound, you can visit this online radio station, which plays quite a few TMBG songs. Or, alternately, if you have an MP3 player, I could send you one or two tracks to sooth your curiousity.

Yipes, I forget to add where you can go for more information.LeVar Burton: They Might Be Giants are a great band, but you don't have to take my word for it... The official site. Contains...neat things. The other official site. Home of latebreaking Giant news. Official site the third. Online Dial-a-Song. Another place to hear TMBG music. (Though it suffers from the same lack of updates that the real Dial-a-Song has been. It's worth it for the intro, though.) The unofficial site. Contains FAQs and such. ------------------ "I am just a worthless liar. I am just an imbecile. I will only complicate you. Trust in me and fall as well." -- Tool

The first two songs I ever heard by TMBG are:- Istanbul (not Constantinople) and
- Particle Man
I saw both for the first time as music videos on Tiny Toons Music Television. I liked the band so much that six years later I bought 2 albums (for me, that's fanatical enthusiasm!) I have Flood and another album yet to be remembered (since I sold the car with the CD changer in it, I don't get my CDs out and listen to 'em so much. :P --Baloo ------------------ You can only take offense if you brought some with you. www.geocities.com/Area51/Shire/8641/

I have those two, plus "Finished With Lies", "Certain People I Know", "Birdhouse in your Soul", and.... *thinks*...... another one I can't remember the name of. And I have a tape of them, too.------------------ From Me all things proceed and unto Me they must return. Let My worship be in the heart that rejoices, for behold all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you. ... Know the Mystery: for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without. For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.
