We have hurricane in the eastern US, and a 7.0 earthquake hit southern California early this morning. Is everybody okay?

I'm sorta spooked...

Ten years ago tomorrow was the Loma Prieta quake...

The earthquake was out in the desert by Joshua Tree.
The worst that happened was a derailed train. I felt
it for like 20 seconds, and I'm like 100 miles from
Joshua Tree park. I heard it could be felt in Arizona
too.

Lots of rolling...like a very slow coaster. Although out in Palm Springs and closer to the center of the event, I hear it was much more of a sharp jolt. not nearly as bad as the Northridge quake of a few years ago, but then again, it was out in the middle of nowhere.

Oh, it's just a fake news story.

"Joshua Tree"? Yeah, sure. Whatever. You California people think we'll fall for anything. Next you'll tell us your capital is some equally silly-named place like Upper Mongobula or Sacramento.

Pound for pound, Oregon has the silliest names, actually. Check out the back of a road atlas some day.

Doesn't hold a candle to Booger Cat, California (the name of an old mining town).

Garberville, California.

Spent the night there. Won't make that mistake again.

You never heard of Hongerige Wolf then. And yes, that means Hungry Wolf. And it's actually a village in the Neths.

Wow, the quake made a twenty mile long rupture in the
Mojave desert. Just imagine if there was a city there :P

My brother (anti-U2) would like to see that tree burnt down. When he heard of the earthquake, he asked me: "Is the tree gone yet?"

Grrrrr.........

Stupid names?
You've come to the right place. Irish placenames are some of the worst.
Some local examples:
[list]
  • Glenamaddy, Gleann na Madadh in Irish.
Means Valley of the Dogs. And is my hometown.

  • Lisheenaheilta. Pronounced as is.
Don't dare ask me what it means.

  • Boyunagh. Pronounced "Bweev-na." It means Yellow River, I think.

  • Kilkerrin, Cill Ciaran in Irish.
    Means Ciaran's Church.
