I just had to use that title read this article... quote:
Send Page Friday - 03:57 11/26/99, EST Pioneer to Launch World's First Recordable DVD Player TOKYO (Reuters) - Pioneer Corp will launch the world's first recordable digital video disk (DVD) players and DVD discs in North America and Europe next year, the audio and video equipment maker said on Friday. The new video machines allow recording of up to six hours and will be first sold in Japan from December 3 at a price of 250,000 yen ($2,399) each, a Pioneer spokesman said. The company aims to sell 30,000 units in Japan by March 2000 and 150,000 to 200,000 in Japan in the year starting next April. Pioneer has yet to set an overseas sales target or the exact date of its sales start-up, he said. Blank recordable DVD-RW discs will cost 3,000 yen ($28.79) each, the spokesman said.

Well, it'll be two or three years before they're anywhere near affordable or reliable, so I don't think I'll delay buying my first DVD player until then.Any recommendations, BTW? For main units, not DVD-ROM drives. . .

Excellent!! I was waiting until a recordable version came out before looking into buying a DVD player. It should only be a few years now before the price comes down to an affordable range where I can buy one By the way, does anyone know if they happened to mention whether you can record multiple times over old material on those discs? You damn well better be able to, for thirty dollars a disk!! ------------------ "But, it was so artistically done." -Grand Admiral Thrawn

Well, it says "DVD-RW", so you must be able to, since "RW", when it isn't our favorite Dutchman, stands for "ReWritable". Either that, or the use of the term "DVD-RW" was incorrect.------------------ "General Hammond: Request permission to beat the crap out of this man." -Colonel O'Neill, Stargate: SG-1: "Bane"

We've got a Samsung 709. It's been chipped to play Region 1 DVD's, but if you've got an AIWA hi-fi, there's a cheat you can do. If you point the AIWA remote at the DVD and hit 'open/close', the DVD drive opens. Put in a Region 1 DVD, and close the drive, and it plays it. Neat. We're happy with it, and they're fairly cheap now. Writeable DVD drives are a few years off, and what's the poit in waiting that long? Buy now, and then buy again. They hardly cost the earth. Actually, it's probably best your 709 can play R1 DVDs, I hear it can't play half the R2s on the market without complicated fixes. . .At present I'm leaning towards the Sony 525.

Ah yeah, that. Bloody Matrix. Bloody Matrix.Still, Woolies have taken the logical approach of just withdrawing 'The Matrix', claiming it to be faulty. Saves them dealing with customer complaints I suppose. I'm taking it to Comets to get the firmware updated. ------------------ *gasp* "The pictures...they're...coming...alive!" -Abe Simpson, on the miracle of the moving image

The 709 can't play The Matrix?! That's their market share shagged, then. . .I don't know what to do - whether to buy a DVD now or wait a month. Can I afford it now? Yes. But I dislike making too many big purchases in one month. . .

The way I figure it, when I get the DVD player I'm going to go all out. That includes a big TV (bigger that is!) and a complete ALR JORAN / Arcam surround sound system. To complement the existing stereo setup.
