According to some sources, the Statue of Liberty was modelled after a black woman. Not according to the Statue of Liberty article at SNOPES. --Baloo ------------------ "If knowledge is power, then willful misinformation is the work of the Devil." -- Barbara "the man who sought Liberty's talents" Mikkelson http://members.tripod.com/~Bob_Baloo/index.htm [This message has been edited by Baloo (edited December 03, 1999).]

This is one of those things that it always surprises me that people don't know. I must have read it somewhere early on, or something, but I've known for quite some time that the Statue of Liberty (the face, anyway), was the designer's mother's. I guess, when I know things like that, I unconsciously assume everyone else does, too, and it throws me off when somebody's never even heard of it before...------------------ "Gee, do they still make wooden Christmas trees?" -Linus van Pelt, A Charlie Brown Christmas

Going by her nose, she's classic Greek. Or Neo-romantic. She can't be southern European though, she's way too tall :]

This could possibly be more urban folklore, but I've always heard that the model for the face was the artist's wife, but the model for the body was the artist's mistress. I always thought that was kind of funny."No, really dear, it's you! Don't you recognize the face?" Can anyone verify that? --Baloo ------------------ "If knowledge is power, then willful misinformation is the work of the Devil." -- Barbara "the man who sought Liberty's talents" Mikkelson http://members.tripod.com/~Bob_Baloo/index.htm [This message has been edited by Baloo (edited December 04, 1999).]

No, the face was his mother. So, if it was also his wife, uhh... Well, I don't think the Statue of Liberty was designed by Cletus the slack-jawed yokel... :-)BTW, I almost used an acronym instead of typing out "Statue of Liberty", but I realized it already meant something else... :-) ------------------ "Gee, do they still make wooden Christmas trees?" -Linus van Pelt, A Charlie Brown Christmas
