I've heard for many years that there are some who insist that the moon landings were an elaborate hoax, with various reasons given for the deception.

I found this at The Straight Dope:

http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mmoonhoax.html

So tell me. What explainations have you heard why the moon landings were a hoax.

The feeblest one I've heard was that when the Apollo 1 capsule burned, killing astronauts Grissom, Chaffee, and White, NASA could not determine the cause of the fire (the oxygen explaination was only part of the cover-up). They decided to fake the rest of the missions to avoid loss of human life. They didn't want the public (or the Russians) to think we had dropped out of the space race. Missions were launched, but they were unmanned missions using robotic explorers, and the film of men exploring the moon were faked using desert locations and hollywood movie sets commandeered for the purpose.

Besides, if Stanley Kubrick really had been the director of the faked moon footage, wouldn't the surface have looked like it did in 2001? :-)

TSN, that's what they want you to think.

I heard this malarky when I was a kid. Basically, humans are too stupid to go to the Moon: NASA faked the trip and kept the money.

The whole fake moon landing thing is just about as bad as people who say there is no such thing as plate tectonics. They need to really look at the facts.

No, what they need is to be thrown into the ocean right where the plates are pulling apart, so they can see it firsthand. And the moon people need to be put on the moon and left there, for the same reason. :-)

But they did land on the moon. They have the tom Hanks movie to prove it! (Forrest Gump ruled). Oh wait, that would be too easy to prove. No. They faked it to bluff the Russkies.

Well, I though Baloo was back, with his old friend Cecil in tow. But no. T'was not to be. One look at the date told me all I needed to know. And that was that this thread was old.

I think we should smack Jeff K around a bit because he keeps doing this... Then archive all threads more than 3 months old. And smack Jeff K around some more.

You know.....back to the topic (What a strange idea!)
If the US moon landings were faked, wouldn't the Soviet Union at the time have said something...anything?
You'd think that exposing a gigantic US hoax would have been very tempting for them...and between the KGB or by using other more scientific means, they would have found out somehow or other.
Unless of course you're paranoid enough to believe that the US actually controlled the Soviet Union at the time to justify arms sales and a large military...

That's the problem with any conspiracy - JFK, the Moon landings. . . the sheer number of people involved, and the need for all of them to keep quiet forever. Or be kept quiet. It's just not plausible.

Thought you'd be interested. Maybe you could give us some insight on how terminally paranoid individuals could possibly justify such a huge organized conspiracy. Given your personal experience and expertise in this area, you would probably have some great insights on this massive conspiracy...to ban *cough* ...fake the US moon landings.

The easiest way to realize that the moon landings weren't a hoax?

WATCH THE DUST.

The dust that the astronauts traipsed through. It puffed up and fell in ways that are ONLY consistent with extremely low-G movement.

Sure, with modern computer graphics, we could imitate the same thing TODAY, but back THEN, computer graphics for even the most sophisticated computers weren't much better than "pong."

THE TRUE CONSPIRACY:
The True Conspiracy is that which is being perpetrated by conspiracy theorists: The attempt to make all the rest of us as paranoid and stupid as they are.

There was also that experiment they did with the hammer and the feather falling to earth with the same acceleration. They also, on a later mission, placed a mirror on the surface of the moon, and they reflect lasers from the mirror to get information about the moon's orbit.

"Philosophy is written in this grand book - I mean universe-which stands continuously
open to our gaze, but which cannot be understood unless one first learns to

of mathematics, and its characters are triangles, circles and other geometric
figures, without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word
of it; without these, one is wandering about in a dark labyrinth."
Galileo (1623)

Actually, the hammer/feather thing has nothing to do w/ low-G. It has to do w/ the lack of atmosphere. Do it in a room w/ all the air sucked out, and you'll get the same effect.
