I was thinking it might be something to do with the blind spot in the eye, but that would only be on one specific part of your field of view.

It is mostly due to the fact that your eyes can only focus on one spot at a time. Because of all the black squares your eyes send in false images to your brain about what is between them. Oh our weak visual organs.
