Basically Metallica (and a few other groups) think the broadcast of downloadable MP3s over the internet infringes on their copyrights. Napster states that they are innocents, only providing links to private sites, and the private sites are the infringers. Etc.------------------ Look at the past few years: Jimmy Carter: Who we kidding, Valium Posterchild. We go to: Ronald Reagan, Howdy Doody Sr. If it keeps getting benign, we might end up with: Mr. Rogers, "Can you say Armageddon? Oops, too late." Or we can get macho and have: Jack Nicholson vs. Clint Eastwood, Shortest debate in history, all Jack will have to say is "How can you debate me, you haven't opened your goddammed eyes in twenty years."

I was banned from Napster by Metallica. (I got back on. Good thing I know my registry)The funny thing is, I OWN EVERY SINGLE ALBUM OF THEIRS and only have live versions of songs on my computer. Serves Napster right!!! Poor metallica!! they are bound for the poorhouse!! Seriously though, I think that metallica's sueing napster is really dum. I mean, so they make less money boo hoo hoo :-(. Who gives a rat's behind?? It's that napter's fault that cds are so dang overpriced, and that there's no point in getting a cd, if you can get the songs and make your own cd's. It's the risk you run when you walk the line. But I don't think they will lose that much. Most of the people who get the mp3 are the ones who don't buy the CDs bacause it's not worth it. That's why I...uh, I mean my friend downloads them. But I think they are talking about tens of thousands when they make millions. Big deal.------------------ It doesn't matter if you don't know what you're doing as long as you look good doing it.

That's my position on the matter. If someone is d'loading the songs instead of buying them, they wouldn't have bought them anyway. They would have had someone make a copy for them.Sure, I d'load MP3s. But, if I didn't, I still wouldn't buy most of the albums. I'm not going to spend that much money on something w/ a song or two that I like. When there is an album I like in its entirety (or close to it), I buy it. Nobody's losing money off me because of MP3, and I'm fairly certain that's the way it is in general. Of course, now I would never buy a Metallica CD. This isn't about "intellectual property". They're only doing this because they're money-hungry bastards. ------------------ "How many Libraries of Congress per second can your software handle?" -Avery Brooks, IBM commercial

And how exactly are artists supposed to stay alive with no money?I'm pro-Napster, but to say that the anti-crowd is solely a bunch of posers is flat out wrong. I see. Metallica needs to lighten up. So do the other singers. An MP3 Player costs what, $200-300 US minimum compared to the cheap $30-50 discmans which are easier to use? Please, MP3's aren't the end of their (music industries) money grubbing days. ------------------ Ex-Admin at the TrekBBS.com Cute, cuddly, widdle teddy bears usually will eat you alive unless you can prove you're a god.

HA!Discman's are $30 in the US? They cost minimum 60 quid ($90 for the internationally ignorant) over here. And MP3 players are around 200 too. Damn you. Damn you all to the fires of Hades. But I'm kinda siding with Tim here. Although I don't copy music, I do copy some software. Stuff like Office 2000, which I could never, ever afford. But if there's something I like, that costs less than 60 quid, I'll buy it. I know it may seem a bit hyporcriphal, bt I need the expensive stuff to help with my school/uni work. The games are purely for my pleasure. I can do without them, so I buy them if I want them. But the attitude of "why pay for anything? I can copy everything, and live on a big CD-R mountain of gold!" isn't helpful. That's what killed the Amiga in this country, and what would have killed the PC if CD-ROM's hadn't taken over. Artists don't work for free. And exactly how much do CD's cost in the US anyway? There're about 10 over here, which I think is prefectly reasonable for an album if you like several of the songs. ------------------ "A fully functioning, cybernetic, technologically advanced team of superheroes... and NOBODY'S got a flashlight?" - Polly Ester; Samurai Pizza Cats

I'm not saying they work for free. I meant that loosing a couple percent wouldn't have bothered them that much if their main goal was producing music. It seems to me all the people complaining are just trying to get the entire pot for them selves.Liam, sorry things cost so much. You could try eBay. there are a bunch of people selling stuff that are over by you. Might be worth a look. ------------------ It doesn't matter if you don't know what you're doing as long as you look good doing it.

The average cost of CDs in Canada is ~$20. The average game (brand new) costs about $6o. Wait about a year and the price usually goes down to $30. Discmans are anywhere from $35 (not brand names, but still work rather well) to $150 (you're talking Panasonic Shockwave/Sony ESP here).------------------ "When you realized that your website is your business and your software can't handle the traffic, that was an epiphany." -Avery Brooks, IBM commercial

If you think rock stars are paid too much... YOU try creating a top-40 album.I wish these same people would find a way to 'pirate' major-league sports. If you think major-league sports players put little effort into their 'job' then think again. They work just as hard as anyone I know. Even more so since their job is a huge part athletic. I couldn't play in the majors. Or even the minors. And I bet nobody on this board could even come close to as good as they are. Anyone who makes millions a year has to work for it. To be truthful, I've purchased CD's because of the fact I downloaded some of their mp3s. Take Individual Totem for example. I heard one of their songs, and I decided to buy the CD. Most musicians don't make enough money to do it as a real job.And musicians have nothing to do with top 40 records. Also, the "industry" is currently facing an antitrust battle of its very own, as judges have found that CD prices are artificially inflated. ------------------ It's not my birthday It's not today It's not my birthday so why do you lunge out at me? -- They Might Be Giants **** Read chapter one of "Dirk Tungsten in...The Disappearing Planet"!
