Or is that Tolkien? Anyway.

With the promise of The Lord of the Rings finally being adapted into a movie worthy of it, I think it's important that we remember the many roles this saga has played in our culture since its initial publication, both large and small.

One of the smaller ones is a song. It isn't a long song, but in its two minutes and twenty seconds it captures the very essence of The Hobbit, and illustrates the character of Bilbo so deftly one would think ole' JRR had penned it himself. I speak, of course, of the immortal tune, "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" by, who else, Leonard Nimoy.

No, I'm serious. Stop laughing.

The lyrics are as follows:

In the middle of the earth
In the land of Shire
Lives a brave little hobbit whom we all admire
With his long wooden pipe
Fuzzy wooly toes
He lives in a hobbit hole and everybody knows him

Bilbo (Bilbo)
Bilbo Baggins
He's only three feet tall
Bilbo (Bilbo)
Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Now hobbits are peaceloving folks you know
They're never in a hurry and they take things slow
They don't like to travel away from home
They just like to eat and be left alone
But one day Bilbo was asked to go
On a big adventure to the caves below
To help some dwarves get back their gold
That was stolen by a dragon in the days of old

Bilbo (Bilbo)
Bilbo Baggins
He's only three feet tall
Bilbo (Bilbo)
Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Well he fought with the goblins
He battled a troll
He riddled with Gollum
A magic ring he stole
He was chased by wolves
Lost in a forest
Escaped in a barrel from the Elf king's halls

Bilbo (Bilbo)
Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Now he's back in his home in the land of Shire
That brave little hobbit whom we all admire
Just sittin' on a treasure of silver and gold
A-puffin' on his pipe in his hobbit hole

Bilbo (Bilbo)
Bilbo Baggins
He's only three feet tall
Bilbo (Bilbo)
Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

I sincerely hope that someone with some spare webspace will step forward to host this recording, so that we might all enjoy it together. It really is amazingly keen. Trust me. Anybody? Frank?

My thanks to Tim for his assistance in actually downloading the file, as well as being suitably amused by the whole thing.

I am not good with English but excuses me. I hate you whom think bad of the gods of the thunder known under the name of ""Metallica"". Good tape of ""Metallica"" is ""Load"", that you like it or not. A much better tape of Metallica ""Load"" than overrated the tape known under the name of ""Iron Maiden"" ""Powerslave"". You all are penis for the bad one of thought about ""Lars"". ""Lars"" can take a cucumber in bottom of his throat without reflex of muzzle. Lars can too take cucumber in bottom with no stretching of bottom hole sphincter muscle. Thanks for reading.

It's also on the Dr. Demento 30th Anniversary CD 2-pack, along with such other classics as Corky and the Juice Pics' "Eskimo," Weird Al's "Yoda," Monty Python's "Lumberjack Song," The Vestibules' "Bulbous Bouffant" and Tom Lehrer's "The Elements."

While my connection isn't really up to the task of serving large music files, I do have the space. Email the song to me.

Ack! Tolkien. Not one of my favourite authors. Still, movies adaptions can rarely encompass the magic of the book. The minds eye generates much better images, and everyone thinks their own version of Gandalf is needed.

First: Might that CD also contain "Star Trekkin'" by The Firm? I remember hearing the Dr. Demento name connected to that rather funny song.

(edit: Just checked Amazon. Turns out Trekkin' is on the 20th anniversary CD set, not the 30th)

I have that song. It's not by Weird Al, nor is most of the stuff attributed to him on Napster, unless you know it is already. He's actually very annoyed about it.

Okay, here's the song. However, only the strongest of minds will be able to withstand it.

OK, I haven't heard the song, but when I read those lyrics, I can only hear it being done in a rap style...

LOL!

Tom. Actually, "Star Trekkin'" (another hilarious song) is on Demento's 20TH anniversary album, rather than the 30th. I have both, plus the 25th. I hope they do more soon... well, not 'alter-the-spacetime-continuum' soon, but... oh, I'm babbling again.

When I read "Bilbo" his last name was Bagger. Strange.

No, I meant the info, stupid.
And AAMOF I just found a copy at my brother's. His girlfriend was just reading it, otherwise I wouldn't have remembered it!
It was a swedish translation, the 12:th edition, 4:th print I think, from 1990. And it clearly said his name was Bilbo Bagger, and that he was NOT a hobbit, but a hob (pronounced hoob like pool). That's pretty fucked up right there!
I don't know why they translated it, there should be a law, and I have always said "hobbit" anyhow, so there you go.
