It seems to me, that people make too much of it. In both high School and college, I was one of few hispanics, yet, I did not feel singled out. Yet, once, I went to a latino student club retreat, and I heard all of these folks talk about how they felt strange and alienated because they were the one of few latinos in their area and are one of few in their colleges. I was rather puzzled at this becasue that was never the case with me. I never felt that way, nor did I feel singled out. My parents brought me up to celebrate and be proud my heritage, but not to be hung up on it, nor to be oversensitive.

Funny thing, I ocassionally get things in the mail that assume I'm hispanic because of my last name. But I'm as white as can be. Just an intersting side note.

The new way of dealing with differences is to artificially single people out, a la Nurse Gollum being subjected to "Conjoined Twin Myslexia Week" on South Park. Rather than allowing differences to fade into the background as they should, the divisive elements in our society now attempt to draw attention to them.

Listen, if race really didn't matter to anyone anymore, all the folks that make their living harping on about it would be out of a job.. so it's in their best interest to keep it around a bit longer.

Hey, with the last name "Farquhar," I've been mistaken for a whole LOT of things by people who never saw me or just didn't know any better.

So for the record, let me state my official position on race. Ahem.

"I do not CARE what you are. I do not CARE about your heritage, or how proud you are of it. I don't care what your ancestors did, or what you think my ancestors may or may not have done to yours. It is COMPLETELY irrelevant to my life. I do not care if you are black, white, brown, reddish, beige, peach, or blue with yellow polka dots, although I might stare at that last one. It has NO bearing on how I will treat you as a human being. Keep in mind, however, that I mistrust most human beings, and that first impressions really DO count. I treat all humans on a case-by-case, individual impression basis. Chances are, if you don't bother me, I won't bother you. However... cause me or mine harm, and I will destroy you... still, without regard to your appearance."
