Right now, I'm faced with the most important of all roadtrip questions. What music do I bring with me? My, uh, unusual tastes deny the radio as an option. Unfortunately for me, there won't be enough time for me to check this thread before I leave, but hopefully it will stand as a beacon in the night for fellow travelers.
And so: What is the greatest traveling song/album/saga/cycle? Don't say Beowulf. Well, unless you mean it.
My nominations: "Idaho" by John Linnell. "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash. "Escape is at Hand for the Traveling Band" by The Tragically Hip. (Which may or may not be the actual title, but I am too tired to fact-check.)
Of course, I am tempted to nominate the album that lent its title to this thread, by the Magnetic Fields. But I haven't actually heard all of it.

So, how's that Survivor-contest coming along, Newt?
-Well not very well at the MOMENT, everyone seems to have died.
-Gee, that's bad. Those Aliens bugging you yet?
-Not really, they mostly come at night mostly...

Pilot: You're sure they were Americans, eh?
Fraser: They were all wearing new boots, they were driving a Jeep Wrangler, and they carried big guns.
Pilot: Americans it is.
- "due South"
Of course, plans have once again been swapped on me, so no trip.

Beach Boys (Get around round round I get around etc)
Metallica "Wherever I may roam" (especially at night).
Bloodhound Gang. Can't remember the song but it goes like "Life is an endless drive that you take alone,
might as well enjoy the ride, take the long way home"

"Unleash the armageddon,
So all the children go to heaven"

"Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash.
WOW! I haven't heard that in 25 years or so. I knew that he had become popular among some of the younger set, but considering what little I know of Sol's tastes, that one surprised me.
May I suggest, for the next trip, TMBG??

As for the Man in Black himself, who doesn't love Johnny Cash?
And to make this thread all about me, me, me, I've got five albums left to go in my great "Listen to Albums" project. "Perennial Favorites" by the Squirrel Nut Zippers, that Elvis Costello compilation I've mentioned before, "Like Swimming" by Morphine, The Album Which Dares Not Speak Its Name, and Monty Python Sings.

"Yeah...apparently Sizer is very hard to say, so they replace it with 'Is Mr. Caeser home?'
Sometimes I'll say that no, he has, in fact, passed away.
'My apologies.'
'Oh, that's ok, I'm over it. Brutus is still a wreck though.'
Then I hang up."
