Vogon Poet: Have you read any of Banks' non-scifi books? I've read Whit and Complicity, which were ok, but not nearly as enjoyable as the scifi stuff. If you like Iain Banks, you should try Peter F. Hamilton's "Night's Dawn" trilogy.

Well, you can figure it out. The first two digits are the amount of red, the second two are the amount of green, and the last two are the amount of blue. The numbers are in hexadecimal, from 00 to FF. If you don't know how hexadecimal works, it's like decimal except that, instead of each number going 0-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 and then back to 0 (increasing the number to the left every time you get back to zero), it goes 0-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-A-B-C-D-E-F and then back to 0 (increasing the number to the left).

Actually, I've read all of his non-M non-SF books except Espedair Street. I wouldn't go so far as to say some aren't worth reading (Canal Dreams, Whit, The Business, Complicity, A Song of Stone, I'm talking about you) but the ones you shouldn't miss are The Wasp Factory, The Bridge (look out for the Knife Missile!), The Crow Road, and Walking on Glass.

Read all the M SF books, and do it in order of publication. The latest Culture novel, Look to Windward, may be his last for a while, and it's also IMO the best.

I've been reading the scifi books in order, but I've kind of been held up by Feersum Endjinn. I heard it was good, but I find the parts with the phonetic spelling annoying to read.
