Ok, so I have my brand new Hard Drive, which is 20 Gigs.

Okay, so my Hard drive isn't as compatible with my BIOS, as it only recognizes HD's of sizes under 8.4 Gigs.

Okay, so I partition my HD into three equal spots. I also load in Win98.

Okay, I have multiple hardware profiles, several for the computer labs in and around school, and one for my home Compy.

Okay, I have to load the resident hardware of my computer into my Home Computer Hardware Profile. It then asks to reboot the computer so that the new settings will work.

Okay, I reboot, but when I get onto windows, it says "Windows has detected an error in your registry"

Okay, it goes back to a prior copy of this registry.

Okay, so I have to start all over again.

Okay, so WHAT THE @$%$#%& IS GOING ON HERE?

I would suggest a BIOS update (if you know the brand of your motherboard), as there should not be a problem with your setup (but then again, your OS is Windows

)

I'd agree the BIOS should be looked at first, it should be able to handle HDD sizes of any size. Can't really give you any advice about hardware profiles since I've always avoided them like the plague, knowing what Microsoft can be like. Why do you use them anyway?

This happens to me twice a week. I usually just move the window down behind the start bar, and it goes away. It hasn't done anything bad, I don't think. Of course, unlike me, if you wanted to actually take care of your Computer, you could try one of the solutions above.

I'd go with the BIOS-update. Write down the BIOS-name and/or number in the early part of the boot-sequence, and search for the manufacturer on the net. Usually they have a homepage.

Or you could try some motherboard- and BIOS-sites.

I'm gonna have the BIOS updated by a friend of mine later on. Not going to be easy since it appears that my Motherboard was created by a company that appears to have gone out of business.

The multiple hardware profiles are necessary so that this HDD can be used on many different computers in the Lab, as well as at home. This way, with handling really big projects, I don't need 10 floppy disks to carry my work. BTW: the HDD was provided by my school, heh.

I'm not so sure how Partitioning a HD might cause this problem.

Well, the problem of identity, I would guess. First you decide the identity when partitioning, C:, D:, etc. Then you have two cables, primary and secondary, which can be further complicated by adding a CD. Then you have jumper settings, etc. Many things can go wrong...
