I never thought I'd ever WANT to live in Virginia, but I just had to turn down a staff position with the "Mark Warner for Governor" campaign because there's no way I can afford to drive an hour and a half (to three hours, 'pending on traffic) six days a week to Alexandria ... (and there's no way I can afford that kind of gas money on $1500 a month)

::bummin'::

On the other hand, there's always the Kathleen Kennedy Towsend campaign here in Maryland next year ...

So how do you pay for food and gas without a job?

I already have a job.

This was a better job in terms of prestige and resume building, although a worse job in terms of pay.

So ...

This may sound naive, but isn't gas incredibly cheap in the U.S.? Something like a buck per gallon? So unless you drive a tank... or a Jeep...

(In contrast, one gallon (rougly 4 litres) here will set you back nearly 6 dollars. <<== Edited, my calculation was *slighty* off )

In New Jersey, oil capital of the Upper Eastern Seaboard, you can get gas at a reasonable $1.00 to $1.10, I think. In New York, where I live, it goes for $1.46 to $1.55. These are the prices for regular.

I would be paying roughly $15 a day in gas. That comes out to $360 a month (est.), not to mention the hassle of dealing with both the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. rush hours. So, I actually got in contact with Lt. Gov Towsend's office for information about her campaign, so I'll sign on there (living where I do, I'm sure they'll have a campaign office closer to where I am).

In California, the price of gas has been up to two dollars a gallon. Anything over a buck fifty and people are complaining. But then of course, they are also the same people who bitch and moan about rotating blackouts and still waste electricity by running the AC at full blast and driving gas-guzzling SUVs all the while crashing them because those SUVs are Ford Explorers with Firestone tires.

$1.30 when I was out yesterday. Which is weird, since Chicago is an hour away, and always has the highest gas prices in the nation.

Costs between $10 - $15 to fill up my Alero.

$.649/L currently for regular gas. My mother filled up her Focus the other night for $14. It has a 50 L tank.

Yeah, but you're all fat from leg underuse. Nyah.

The topic is a beautiful thing.

Too bad about the job, Jeff. But, it looks like you have a chance to join a campaign closer to you. There's the silver lining.

I, on the other hand, have to start searching for employment the minute I move back on-campus next month. I had my job pulled right out from under me because the only person in that damn department who doesn't like me got bumped up to a position to prevent me from getting my job back. ::insert gratuitous profanity here::

"The topic is a beautiful thing."

No, sunshine, flowers, and Simon are beautiful things. Not the topic. Never the topic.
