To all the newbies:

Hi, everyone, my name is Dukhat. I am not an administrator of this board, but a very loyal member of Flare. I would like to take this opportunity to let you all know that you are welcome to post anything you like here, except where such posts violates the rules as stated on the FAQ page.

Lately, however (almost overnight, it seems) there have been some new & relatively new posters here who have been posting threads that are really not relevant to any sort of meaningful discussion. Some of these threads are actually "practical jokes" of a sort.

Keeping in mind what I've stated above, this forum is for intelligent, rational conversation about Star Trek & other sci-fi mediums. Several times, discussions may turn into debates, and debates may turn into arguments. But those arguments still have a rational tone to them, and they're still based around the central topic of Star Trek. Posting things like "Scott Bakula is gay" just because someone dared you to do it, or "Let's see how many people I can piss off" is not only pointless, it's stupid. And I guarantee no one here will care for this.

So by all means continue to post here, if you have something relevant to say. If you don't, don't. Or go over to the TrekBBS, where pointless posting seems to be the norm.

Thank you.

P.S. Also, saying things like "Fuck you" to all of us won't exactly make you the most favorite person around here, and will most likely get you banned.

I fully agree with you, Dukhat. In fact, I'll add a bit of my own to it.

Flare is a community of intrepid and oftentimes insane Trek fans. We enjoy a good debate. We enjoy arguing the many different aspects of Trek. We enjoy giving each other little jabs here and there. We enjoy being eccentric and human at times. Pointless threads are not inherently bad, but you have got to realize that some things are more appropriate than others.

The Officers' Lounge is the place for threads of a fun nature that have nothing to do with Trek (well, sometimes they do). But if you are going to post something there, it isn't gonna fly that you post a thread with the subject "I am Siegfried and Sol System's Love Child" and make your post "Just kidding." There really isn't a point to it. But if you follow a thread subject like that with a detailed analysis of how I and Sol System could produce you as an off-spring, then you'll just make worry about you.

Each forum has an explanation of its purposes. The General Trek, Enterprise, Voyager, and Starship forums are usually for serious discussion of issues related to those topics. However, insanity in those forums is acceptable as well under certain circumstances. To post a thread in the Enterprise forum called "I hate Jolene Blalock" and follow it with a post "She killed my kitten" would likely be locked if that forum had a moderator. A thread called "I hate Jolene Blalock" and followed by a post explaining what you feel is her substandard acting skills in portraying a Vulcan is fine. Likewise, The_Tom has a funny and light-hearted thread in the Enterprise forum called "Car Trek" that shows the situation involving the Enterprise design in all its technicolor hilarity.

So, what this all comes down to is using common sense when you decide to post. Before you hit submit on a topic called "PrOof ThAt BRaga iS tHE AntI-ChrISt," stop and think about if that's really something that ought to be posted to Design, Artwork, and Creativity.

This message was brought to you by the number 9734 and the letter C.

Very well said, folks. To our new members who like posting pointless stuff: go to the TrekBBS for that. They like that there. We like (somewhat) intelligent conversation here. Thank you. Goodbye.

Oh, yes. It isn't neccessary to post THE ENTIRE post that you're responding too. It's just ... well, wasteful. I mean, I'm not a big fan of Republicans or anything, but the least you could do is conserve Charles' computer space for "new" stuff (not copying old stuff), okay?

This information should be in the FAQ; it's rather pointless (IMHO) to put it in a thread - since this post will be on the 2nd or 3d page within a day (I really doubt that any new member starts digging through the archives immediately after he/she has signed on).

Oh, we'll see about that. One of these days, one of them other fancy schmancy boards will offer you a position, then we'll see how loyal you are...

The_Evil_Lord, this information is in the FAQ that Sol System wrote. In fact, he posted his latest revision in another thread (FAQ! Drink!) asking for criticism. The only problem is that it hasn't been linked to that FAQ link at the top of every page.

Also, this will likely be on the the first page long enough for the people that we are talking about to read this. Besides, sometimes you need to repeat things in order for people to get it. I know that first hand from working in college dorms. This thread will serve the purpose that Dukhat wanted it to serve: to reminder the new and recently new people about Flaretiquette. After all, in the matter of about 36 hours, we had an Enterprise thread that stated Scott Bakula is a bad captain because he's gay, the weirdest GW Bush thread ever in the Flameboard, and MIB posting seven threads in the matter of an hour that were completely bizarre and were locked with little comment.

FYI, MIB has had his posting privs removed until he straightens out.

Thanks for the update, Charles.

His thread posting priviliges? Or all posting privies?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

All posting privileges. I'm not sure there's a way to only remove "new thread" privileges.

BTW, I was the one who suspended his posting ability when I was informed of the problem. That was to stop him from continuing. I've left it up to CC to decide when to restore said privileges...

Better off made in the announcement forum.

Not really.

I hear word that he's willing to apologize. I will take no action until I hear it first hand. I.e. from him.

Hint hint.

I think Charles is trying to show those frisky newbies that he's one of those good 'ol tough-but-fair types.

Maybe I skimmed the FAQ a bit too briefly, but there are a lot of redundant threads floating around. Over in the Enterprise Forum, there's one for virtually every paragraph of that Writer's Bible. Do creating lots of threads enhance yourself somehow, perhaps in some Sol-like way?

You mean they give you a good sense of humour and an appalling haircut?

At the moment I have hair that looks not unlike Hamil's in Star Wars. Embarrassing.

Sol, there are caps and fake wigs out there if you really don't like the cut.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Er...yes, there are.
