...because I just killed it. I wiped the entire HD. I've always wanted to kill Windows like that.

Anyway, no clutter or junk on my HD, aside from the basic Compaq software, of course. I'm restoring my documents and such from my tape backup drive. Yes, I said tape backups. I don't have anything better to work with, aside from several dozen floppies. The problem is that the software I used is as archaic as the backup method: it fried my file names. Bunches of stuff now ends with "~1". Sucks. But I fixed most of it. I must get a CD burner. For my birthday next year, perhaps.

Thing is, I only backed up what was necessary, meaning anything I can't redownload. So now I have to get to download.com and get ICQ and Netscape again, for starters, and some good Zip software. Can anyone suggest the best available Windows zip extractor? And what's the best version of ICQ to get? Last I heard, there was some dispute over that.

Thanks, guys.

Oh, and BTW, I need that vorpal bunny pic. It was my desktop walpaper, and I forgot to back it up.

Oh, and BTW, anyone have any opinion on Netscape 6.1? I was using Communicator 4.7, but I just saw this, and don't know anything about it. And why is cNet down? I can't access the server.

The new Netscape is a bit volatile still, it can crash when you're page jumping fast and quickly klicking while the processor's strained. But it doesn't take Windows with it, just that window) but shows promise, the new functions are nice. And if you keep Netscape SmartUpdate on you won't miss any improvements that are published.

WinZip 8.0 works for me, I just need the basic functions.
The 8.1 Beta is out but I'll wait until it's finished.

ICQ 2000b is the latest version available and I've never had any problems.

If you're installing Windows 98, check "Windows Update" as soon as you're settled in, the listed "important fixes" are best to have downloaded. Various system upgrades/fixes since -98, even for the Second Edition.

And get the latest DirectX 8 (.01? Alpha?), it should make all multimedia applications run better, not just games or 3d cards.

Well, I've got Netscape 6.1, and the accompanying AIM. E-mail records transfered intact, except for one I sent this morning and forgot to back up. So far, I like it. I've also got WinZip 8.0. I'm working on ICQ right now, and Adobe Reader is next on my list. Got ZoneAlarm. If I can get my hands on a copy of Office, I should be able to restore the last of my data into Outlook, so I can interface with my Visor (which should be here Tuesday, BTW). I just need that vorpal bunny, and I'll be all set. And DirectX of course. Thanks, man.

IE owns.

OK, ladies and gents. I need your ICQ numbers. I may or may not be able to extract them from my old address list, so just in case, all of you who have ICQ, request an authorization, and I'll re-add you. 10928359. Thanks.

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

Never mind on that. Just everyone re-authorize me and everything'll be hunky-dory.

Posted by Tahna Los (Member # 33) on :

You'll need to request one from us first.

My ICQ at the moment is down so I won't be touching it for a while.

Tape Backups? GEEZ!!!!!!

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

Yep, tapes. Short of buying a $50 piece of equpiment so I could hook my SCSI zip drive into my USB port, it was either that or use my massive collection of floppies.

And I did request re-authorization.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

No, you have to send us a request. You're already on our ICQ lists, so we can't re-add you.

When did those ICQ buttons under our names disappear, anyway?

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

I DID send requests to everyone. Ask Tim, or Jeff, or Tom, or Charles, all of whom granted the requests. Still waiting for Daryus, Kardde, Lee, Liz, Liam, and Tahna, among others. They're listed as "Awaiting Authorization".

He even said "please" in the request.

Oh goodie! Someone else who has had to reformat their HDD! I must have done that to mine oh about thirty-odd times or more over the three/four years that I've had my computer. Lucky for me that I have a 100MB Zip Drive and now a CD-RW Drive too! Should be easy to restore now - when I reformat again to remove my partitions.

Oh yes . . . can I get rid of my partitions without having to reformat? It's a bugger to do and I'm afraid of losing some valuable system information. I do not mind losing info on my D: and E: drives but it's the C: that matters, particulary my ISP data. Any info on this would be really helpful.

Omega: Ya heard me, didn't you? My ICQ is DOWN, Shut off, Deactivated, In Dreamland. Whichever way you want it.

That may change if I can have the HD formatted in the way I want it......

Now, now, I was just making a list of the ones I actually expected to re-authorize me eventually. I'm not betting on Baloo showing up any time soon.

"Oh goodie! Someone else who has had to reformat their HDD! I must have done that to mine oh about thirty-odd times or more over the three/four years that I've had my computer."

What do you do? Wash your computer with magnets every month? I've had to reformat my hard drive maybe once in years of PC ownership. By the time my hard drive gets so full and cluttered that it's unusable, I'm at the point where I need a new computer anyway.

Don't install every little thing you see. And don't dump it all in the root directory. Prevention is better than cure.

"Oh yes . . . can I get rid of my partitions without having to reformat?"

There is a program that can do it. I think it's called Partition Magic. I'm not sure, because partitions are evil.

'I DID send requests to everyone. Ask Tim, or Jeff, or Tom, or Charles, all of whom granted the requests. Still waiting for Daryus, Kardde, Lee, Liz, Liam, and Tahna, among others. They're listed as "Awaiting Authorization".'

I didn't get it. Try again.

"Now, now, I was just making a list of the ones I actually expected to re-authorize me eventually."

And you sent one to Jeff? The two of you should not be allowed anywhere near each other, for the good of us all.

Or religion. But we actually have quite interesting conversations about Tom Clancy. Care to know who the unnamed president who won the '92 election in his universe?

Liam never seems to get my authorization requests. It took three tries last time around...

I got two requests. Auth'ed them both.

"Unnamed president" would be a wild stab in the dark.

An alternate version of Trainspotting just popped into my head. . .

Renton: Well, Omega's always been lacking in moral fiber.
Swanney: He knows a lot about Tom Clancy.
Renton: That's hardly a substitute.

Posted by Omega (Member # 91) on :

Hey, Vogie, you sure you authorized me? 'Cause I'm STILL listed as awaiting authorization. I just resent.

As for smarty-pants Liam, it was Pat Buchanan. So .

Erm. I thought we said Ross Perot.

I told ya Omey, I auth'ed you twice, because I got the request twice (might have something to do with my PC crashing the first time I was online). Went online briefly last night, no request. You don't love me anymore. 8*(

*considers hugging Lee*

*reconsiders*

*pats Lee on the back instead*

There, there.

I just requested authorization for what appears to be the fourth time, according to my records. I sent you a standard message, too. Is 10218272 still your UIN?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Oh, tell everyone, why don't you? Yes, it is. 8)

I'll try to go online at some point over the weekend and have a look. Might as well have my work ICQ too, 66185684.

Surely you're not saying this is a bad thing?
