Here's an interesting little article. I'm not sure if belongs in the Star Wars forum or not, but I think its amusing enough for the Officers' Lounge. http://entertainment.msn.com/news/eonline/101301_jedi.asp

OMG, so incredibly pathetic... Thank God not all British people are like this. Don't they realize it's just a couple of movies?

According to this article over at Snopes, "Jedi Knight" is not a bona fide religious choice nor has it been officially added to the national registry for religions. What has happened is that enough respondants wrote "Jedi Knight" in that the ONS assigned it a numeric code for easing the processing of the census forms.

That is what I heard. People didn't want to put down a real religion so they just put down jedi knight. And since so many people did it they had to assign it a code number to help process it.

TSN: I found the article at Snopes, and just posted it here to add an extra bit of support to the article. Certainly, no one should completely trust Microsoft, even if it is only an entertainment news report.

The original rumour stated that if ernough people put that choice down, it would be granted the status of a bona fide religion. It was almost immediately discounted. However, come the census day a lot of people did put it down anyway.I did. Why? Because I consider the very question of religion to be insulting. Why just put down "none" (or whatever the choice was) when I could put some silly mystic nonsense invented by a Californian film nerd and cause them some inconvenience as a result?

I planned on doing the same thing, but I thought it was more important to attempt to get Wicca recognised ans a religion in this country as if I have any religious leanings they are in that direction.

Wicca IS a religion, as highly & intensely structured as Catholicism. Don't be like everyone else & confuse magic for Wicca.

I never filled out a census form. Never got one... of course, I wasn't the 'head of household,' so I didn't get to fill out anything. Next time, I will.I haven't decided whether to put down "Deist" or "Follower of Hugo, The Divine Eternal Wombat."

Shik, I know it's a religion, it is not recognised as one in the UK. Which is why I put it on my form.

I agree with Vogon Poet in finding the question of religion to be insulting. Writing down Jedi is a way of insulting them back. I hope that, when the time comes for our country to have a census, the government doesn't adopt the fascist attitude of the Australian government and fine everybody who puts down Jedi $1000. Besides, Jedi has just as much to offer as any of the other religions, if not more.

Out of curiosity, how is it insulting for them to ask you what, if any, religion you subscribe to? Seems like a valid statistical datum to collect, in my opinion...

Well, that's a good point, TSN, in terms of society religion is quite an important aspect. When I say the question of religion is insulting, I suppose I mean I find it generally annoying that we still live in a world where religions dominate people's understanding of life. Perhaps I could liken it to being asked if one has had a sex-change, a valid question in many respects, but some would find it mildly insulting.

Oh dear god, he uses the word "datum". He's two small steps away from telling people off for saying "less" when they mean "fewer". And wearing sandles.

Actually, I do need to get around to that soon...And I dislike wearing sandles. And people misuse "less" and "fewer" so often that I just cringe when I notice it and pass over it.
