Can anybody come up with a very common, recognizable model for a handgun circa 1970-80? It's for a story. I've looked up handgun history and stuff on the Net, but can't make heads or tails of it. Help is greatly appreciated.

it's mostly a 1911A1. that is actually a para ordnance (looks like the p13, which is the para odnance version of the colt commander). those have been made since 1988. high cap magazine with a wide body. made in canada, i believe. it should fit the bill nicely.

People also seem to respond pretty well to WalterPPK, Glock (any number below 30), Berreta, Luger, and Browning (string a bunch of letters together).

Colt made a nice 357 in that time frame, and I seem to remember hearing of the "Plastic" gun from that time, that turned out to be Glock. Histroy channel rated Glock the #1 pistol of all time, at least the 9mm. Smith & Wesson made some nice pistols in that time, and Dan Wesson went solo at one point, but I think that was before the time you need. We had a Dan Wesson 45 that was very accurate.

the "plastic gun" from the 70's was the hk VP70, which was the first production polymer frame pistol. it was nice, but had a heavy trigger pull. in my opnion, there are plenty of individual guns that are better than any individual glock (SIG p220/226, SIG P210, HK USP, Beretta 92 Elite, Armand Swanson custom 1911 , etc), but Glock certainly has the best "family" of pistols, overall.

So when was the Glock first introduced? I understand that they made dishes, or something of that nature, before going into guns.
With the History channel, I think they were refering to pistols that the police are using now.

glock was founded in 1963, but they didn't start making guns until like 1983. cops used the VP70z (the z is the civilian version of the VP70 which, in military form combined with a stock/holster, is a machine pistol), but turned to other guns fairly quickly. in fact, the VP70 was one of the first double action only pistols, which are now quite popular with cops, but the expense and heavy trigger pull caused the gun to die an undeserved death. in my opinion, the history channels "history of the gun", etc, are VERY innacurate and like any 1 hour tv history program has to gloss over a lot of stuff (try comparing anything the history channel makes about hitler and the book Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, for example ). i still find the shows enjoyable, but i never take them at face value
if you are going to use a revolver for the story, i would choose the colt detective special. there are a couple good photos here

"History of the Gun", for those who haven't seen it, is a series of one hour programs on the history of the gun, but Ed is correct in that they move quickly, and should be taken with a grain of salt, like anything about History, in the USA.

Kevin Smith does alright, but he's only batting 60% ... Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back were both pretty awful.

Well, it wasn't quite as funny as Clerks and Chasing Amy (leaving aside Dogma and the new one, which I'm not as familiar with.) More than that, Smith made more than a few concessions to the "studio" that he was, in retrospect, not happy with.

In other matters, and out of pure curiousity, Rob, want type of handgun(s) do you own? Glock, Sig, Colt, S&W? Something else?
(P.S. -- my motive is simple curiousity and not to turn this into another debate about government regulation which is really silly since I think even Fo2 and Omega are against assault rifles and what not ... )
