Today is the biggest day in Hollywood...the Academy Awards! Finally, after what seemed like a bad year, we'll get to see what films are honored the most by the Academy. Below are what I think will win, not necessarily what I want to win:
Picture: A Beautiful Mind Director: Ron Howard Actor: Russell Crowe Actress: Halle Berry Supporting Actor: Ben Kingsley Supporting Actress: Jennifer Connelly
In addition, I know "Lord of the Rings" will win VFX and most of the other technical awards, although Moulin Rouge has to get something like art direction. Also, Shrek will undoubtedly win the new "Best Animated Film" category. [ March 24, 2002, 09:02: Message edited by: Veers ]

So when is Snuffelopagus day?
quote: Below are what I think will win, and in parentheses what I want to win:
Er, uh?
And with the historical liberties taken with A Beautiful Mind, don't expect it to win much. [ March 24, 2002, 07:14: Message edited by: Malnurtured Snay ]

Oops. Sorry about that parentheses thing, I was going to do that but then took it out. BTW, by "historical liberties," you mean all those rumors about John Nash? You believe those? People hear something in the media and believe it... Besides, by the time all that stuff was spread around, the Academy had already voted on the winners. Sorry.

Oh, yes, historical accuracy has always been the primary criteria for the Academy judges. Yes, indeed. Absolutely. Yes. 100%.

I don't recall saying that, Sol.
I do remember that being the primary reason cited that Denzel didn't win for "The Hurricane" (which, IMHO, was a pretty bad flick).

Then Braveheart won Best Picture how?
In the name of doing something different, I'm going to rule out winners. Oscar night needs some more good ol' fashioned negativity.

Yeah, don't expect A Beautiful Mind to win much. Good guess, Mr. Incredibly Wrong.

*sigh* Well, at least For the Birds won best animated short. It was way better than its main feature, Monsters, INC.

I wonder. . . people went off Crowe quickly, partly because of his BAFTAs bigheadedness, and partly for beating someone up. But ir eminds me of the way Gerard Depardieu was nobbled for Best Actor for Cyrano de Bergerac. Back then a Best Actor not even speaking English was unthinkable, so a press campaign started up which mis-translated an interview he did in which he talked about his wild youth. "I once saw someone raped" became "I once raped someone" and boom, no Oscar.

I didn't like A Beautiful Mind very much at all. It wasn't a bad film, it just wasn't engaging. And unsetlling.
A BEAUTIFUL MIND
PHASE I:
: I am John Nash. I am an intelligent man. I am at the Important University of the United States. I have discovered MATH! Now I am the smart MATH teacher!
: I am your student who can yell at sweaty men. I am no stranger to sweaty men, as I am TV's whore, Jennifer Connelly. You may remember me from such films as Naked Whore I, II & XVII, and that movie where I got dildo fucked. I am class now, though. Oscar for me.
(General Audience): This movie is a Romance! Between a whore and a very smart man who seems to have discovered MATH! He is very buff as well. Double Whammy, with no remainder! That was a math joke!
(Star Trek Fan): This John Nash could be the namesake of the USS Nash, NCC-2010-B, Sydney-Class Transport Variant! He must do something extraordinary, in addition to discovering MATH!
PHASE II:
: I am now working for the government! Ed Harris is the Jason Bourne of this movie, and I am the master MATHEMATICAL spy!
: I am still a whore. But a whore for you, John Nash, thirty years my senior! I was eaten out by Nick Nolte in Muholland Falls!
: I am the CIA Mastermind behind the covert Mathematics division! It is covert! But our rational numbers are not!
(General Audience): This movie is now a spy thriller! The Day of the Math-al, if you will! I hope John Nash thwarts the Al Qaeda Ten Network! (The Base Ten Network, HAHAHAHA!)

(Star Trek Fan): Updating entry in shiplist! USS Nash, Sydney-Class transport. Named for Mathematical Mastermind and CIA agent, John Nash.
PHASE III:
: I am not a CIA agent. I am just crazy. With schizophrenia. But I am still a math genius! But everything you have just seen is a fantasy.
: I am still a whore. I was being eaten out by an unspecified male while Joaquin Phoenix watches in Inventing the Abbots. My panties were off. Also, it is becoming difficult to enjoy sex with John Nash. Where is my Oscar?
(General Audience): This movie is now a drama, and we have spent 2 hours watching things that are irrelevant. Like a dream sequence. And Jennifer Connelly hasn't been naked yet! No nudity, OR no emotional connection with the characters! This is real though. So it makes == excellence. Because the Motion Picture industry is not founded on its fiction, but it's pseudo-reality movies, as we all know. Give Connelly an Oscar if she removes her panties!
(Star Trek fan): He was crazy? That's it? That's not enough to name a ship after? I'm crazy, and I'm a loser. He at least had a fun disease, the one where you're never lonely. Oh how I wish I had some imaginary friends. Right Clement?
: I am Opie. Just as Fonzie had lots of cool, this movie has the same amount of crazy. Thank you for the Oscar. And let us all remember the man who discovered MATH, John 'Crazyass' Nash.
: I am the real discoveror of MATH! I also am related to the Heaven's Gate Cult Guy.
: I am Marshal Applewhite. I have discovered SECRET ALIEN MATH!

I'm not sure I approve of the Connelly bashing, though. Or, at the very least, the inaccurate descriptions of her specific sex acts.

Yes, i agree.. what is required is detailed, accurate accounting of her sex acts. Pictures, if possible. And Vaseline, also.

Hang on, Lee didn't like Monsters, Inc? He is wrong.
Interesting that this is the first year we have an animation section, and all three nominees were CGi rather than tradition animation. And did anyone think that Dexter, er, Jimmy Neutron was just put in there to pad out the numbers?
And just as (non-)interestingly, next years could be all traditional animation, with Hey Arnold, the Powerpuff Girls, and another one that slips my mind that are all likely to fail dismally at the box office.

The new Disney film, Lilo and Stitch? If not, Ice Age might get nominated even though I don't think it will fail dismally at the box-office. If they can nominate Jimmy Neutron, anything is possible.

I didn't NOT like Monsters, Inc., I just thought "For The Birds" was a lot better. I know it's hard to confue the two given one is a feature length film and the other is five minutes long, but many other people I've spoken to feel the same way. MI was good, but it wasn't as good as Toy Story 1 or 2.
