Ah... is this the 21st Century look of the Trojan man?

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

It's Ben Affleck as Daredevil. And while I admit he looks a bit silly, especially in that sort of publicity pose, I'm afraid I must confess I don't see the confusion.

Am I losing touch?

Matt Murdock, of course.

I've just seen Ben Affleck in a red rubber suit. Oh, my eyes, they hurt, ow.

Posted by DeadCujo (Member # 13) on :

And he's not even one of the more popular ones. I'm sure tons of people know who he is, but like Captain America, he's outdated, sucks and isn't movie material. Neither was Spider-Man, in my opinion. In terms of comics, Spider-Man lost his touch around 1990. I'm curious how they'll portray Kingpin, seeing as he is a huge thousand pound guy. Maybe they'll get Matt Damon to play someone along with Ben. :-\

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

Kingpin's easy. We thought of it the other night after I saw "Spider-Man." Who's 1000 pounds in real life?

That's right.

Marlon Brando.

Pavarotti comes close too, though I can't quite picture him in tight latex.

They can really make hundreds of movies if they keep doing this! Captain America, the Fantastic Four, The Hulk and you name it. As long as they don't make a movie of that X-Men/Star Trek crossover comic.

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

Didn't you know? Hulk's in the works. There was a trailer for it before Spider-Man. [Wink]

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :

OMG...

Didn't know that. I wonder how long it takes before DC Comics characters get new movies. Or have they begun on that as well?

I really hope it's not Batman.

The eleventy billion people who saw Spider-Man opening weekend would tend to disagree with that statement, DeadCujo.

And Daredevil has been quite popular at various times, not the least of which the period just a few years ago when he was being written by Kevin Smith.

I really liked Spider-Man.

Posted by DeadCujo (Member # 13) on :

Oh I know that, but personally I think the movie was a bad representation of the comic. I watched it knowing I wouldn't like it. And I was right, I didn't.

Why did you bother to watch it if you knew that you wouldn't like it? And also if you go into something knowing you won't like it then you won't in most case.
And I thought they did a very good representation of Spider-man in the movie.

I can never be sure if Mr. Magnus actually wants to join his descendants to mine or if it's all some intensely elaborate and amusing jape, visible only to the mind of God, or Canadians.

It's no jape, sir! Then, perhaps I am mistaken, as you seem to be oblivious as to what spurned my call to invitro!

Posted by DeadCujo (Member # 13) on :

I watched it for the sake of curing my boredom. I thought there would be some inconsistencies I could point out and there were a lot. I'm a nitpicker and a big comic book fan, I couldn't just not watch it. A big Star Trek fan wouldn't not watch a new Star Trek film. Nor would a Star Wars fanatic not watch the new movies. As much as a lot of people disliked TPM even after hearing bad things, I'm sure they still went out and watched it. I could tell by the cheesy lines in the trailers that Spider-Man would be lame. I honestly don't know how Toby McGuire can be taken seriously. I laughed so hard when his "I'm Spider-Man" line came up. It was just rediculous.

Uh, it's Spider-Man, right? It's not Citizen Kane or The Godfather, it doesn't need non-cheesy dialogue.

It's based on a cartoony cartoon comicy comic book, and it's a movie comic book. It was a pretty damn good adaptation, and millions of people agree.

Posted by DeadCujo (Member # 13) on :

Perhaps I'm just overly stubborn, but the movie was plain stupid.

I think Spider-Man is the best movie this year so far. Certainly one of the best comic book films ever made.

Mind you, I've only seen one movie this year. I think.

I've seen plenty of comic book films, though.

There will be a Batman Forever live action or a Pre-Batman movie. I oike the first.

There will be Hulk, Daredevil, X-Men 2, and maybe Iron Man.

Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :

Missed the boat on Batman Forever by about, oh, seven years, bub.

I believe you mean "Batman Beyond," and I think saying "it will be" is going a little too far. It's been kicked around in development hell along with Superman Lives and all that jazz.

Iron Man is in a similar predicament, as is Ghost Rider and a Punisher movie. Catwoman seems to be more likely to go behind the cameras than most of them.

The only other comic book-based film that I can think of that is actually well into preproduction and that I'm actually looking forward to seeing is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Which, if done well, could r0xx0rz.

"Catwoman seems to be more likely to go behind the cameras than most of them."

Selina Kyle - Director?

From the janitorial sources that I know, a Batman Beyond movie in the works is about as likely as I am a 30 foot tall man, with enormous feet. As I am not, the movie is likely as not as well.

I can understand someone not knowing who the Fantastic Four are. But someone who doesn't know who they are but does know who the Silver Surfer is is in a world where up is down and crazyness leads to carpet eating.

I don't know about the US, but the 90s Marvel cartoons were all fairly popular over here, and probably raised awareness of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk and Fantastic Four than the comics ever have (especially Spider-Man). But then comics don't really sell here at all.

Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :

Actually, considering the disturbing amount of star power that was behind the voices in that cartoon, a live action version with the whole gang back could be, well, interesting. Maybe that's not quite the right term.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

What star power?

Posted by Vice-Admiral Michael T. Colorge (Member # 144) on :

Pornstar power... that's what it would take to make a Captain Planet movie economically successful.

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :

I know Silver Surfer from his tv animated series. I do know Cpt. America from his few appearances in X-Men, but the Fantastic Four have not been in many episodes, at least not in the ones I saw.

Captain Planet... one of the few superheros funded by the government :S

if you really want a weird movie, do Captain Bucky O'Hare.

Wait a minute, what abouta big-budget CGI live action Thunderbirds remake [Razz]

STAR POWAR!11

LeVar Burton
Whoopi Goldberg
Edward Asner
James Coburn
Phyllis Diller
Jeff Goldblum
Helen Hunt
Margot Kidder
Malcom McDowell
Meg Ryan
Martin Sheen
Sting
Dean Stockwell
David Warner

Well, B-List all the way, but interesting. A lot of them seem to do "Additional Voices" which could mean 'Bathroom Attendant', I don't know.

Jeff Goldblum was "Duke Nukem", which is disturbing even though it's the not the Duke Nukem we all know and have slightly pacifist attitudes towards.

Umm... Daredevil has been a regular member of Marvel's 'high-profile' superheroes since his creation in the early 60's. Are you joking by pretending you've never heard of him?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Nope. Never heard of him at all. Not really into comic books.

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

Not comic book-related at all, but definitely fanboyish & it fits the thread subject well.

Posted by thoughtychops (Member # 480) on :

Not only is Daredevil blind, but he's a blind lawyer. See? Because the justice system is blind.

Stan Lee was cutting edge, brother.

apparently the need to dress up in fetish gear and wrestle criminal men who cackle and wear spandex is a powerful one, no matter your handicap.

There is a super-chick named Silhouette that can't walk. She has crutches with electric charges in them that are used like cattle prods, and she can fight like a ninja. A ninja that can't walk, that is.

There are several mute super-heroes. Several more have speech impediments.

I think they said once that Tony Stark was color blind. Which is why he let a black guy wear his Iron Man armour, I guess.

And of course the Hulk is retarded.

Comics were PC before PC was cool.

Yes, but - how does this guy smite the forces of evil then? Flail about wildly with his cane? I'm getting a Rutger-Hauer-in-Blind Fury vibe here. . .

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Why, with his fantastic non-visual senses of perception!

Er, and I think they wound up giving him some kind of "radar sense" too.

Posted by First of Two (Member # 16) on :

Okay, this goes out to the mundanes:

Daredevil (Matt Murdock) was your typical scrawny geek-type who always ends up becoming a superhero in comic books. His father was a prizefighter, his mother deceased. Matt was a timid kid, not physical at all, and the other kids taunted him by calling him 'Daredevil' (among other things.)

Matt lost his vision in an accident while pushing an old man out of the way of a truck which was carrying radioactive waste (See how many teenagers would do that nowadays). A canister fell out of the truck and struck Matt on the face, destroying his sight. However, Matt soon discovered that while his vision was gone, the sensitivity of his other senses had increased to an astounding degree, and he had developed a kind of 'sonar' which enabled him to 'feel' around distant objects, sort of like a bat. (We all have this sonar to a very minor degree, actually.)

When his father was murdered by the Kingpin's men for refusing to take a dive during a fixed fight, Daredevil, having honed his senses and finally begun working on his physical skills as well, avenged his death, and took up the name and costume of "Daredevil."

(At least, that's the original origin story. YMMV.)

Not many, the "dive under moving vehicles" gene being selected against for obvious reasons.

Posted by thoughtychops (Member # 480) on :

And Daredevil then found a blind master to teach him martial arts. His name was Stick. After he started fighting a lot of ninjas in almost every other issue, Daredevil was beloved by the fans for being the most realistic character they had ever produced.

He fights them with a stick, too. A red stick.

Realism, yes.

Incidentally, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were originally a homage to Daredevil. A pretty funny one in some ways. Daredevil fights the Hand. The Turtles battle the Foot. Ha.

Daredevil started getting more realistic during the 70s/ 80s when the book wandered out of the costumed adventure genre, and started with grim, realistic depictions of real crime and street life. you still had the unlikely metahuman in red tights at the center of the show, but the book phased out a lot of focus on costumed supervillains and fantastic plots for a while and depicted drug dealers, prostitution, etc etc and made its mark around then. Frank Miller worked on it, working on the same 'true crime' sense he later honed in Dark Knight and Sin City.

Posted by thoughtychops (Member # 480) on :

I have all of miller's run. There was some grim and gritty stuff, this is true. The issues with the Punisher are some of my favorites. But there was also a lot of ninjas.

Not cutting it down, you understand. I like ninjas, and I like Daredevil. But it wasn't nearly as "real" as some folks make it out to be. Hence the jokes.

"The Corpse is dead!!"

And still they managed to get him into a costume, that is incredibly funny.

The Hand is featured in many other Marvel comics as well, as they are officially in the Marvel universe.
I know Logan/Wolverine has toasted legions of them during the years, and they mostly vaporize when killed. Logan commented it once, "Some day I gotta figure out how they do that..."
