Ritten: no, I still have two part-time jobs (delivering pizzas Monday and sometimes Tuesday nights) for about six to twelve hours a week; and working in the computer lab four days a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday monrings; Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday evenings) for a total of fourteen hours a week.
Edepis: you can do better.

In any case, methinks 14 hours of work a week is quite enough while studying as a student, but thats just lazy ole' me. Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
Yeah, lazy ole' you probably doesn't have to pay rent, insurance, power, home & cell phone, cable, car payment, food, gas, and credit cards bills, do you?

I wish, *Looks ruefully at preliminary budget for second year CS*, lesse:
rent, yes insurance, nope power, yes phones, yes cable, yes car payment, nope (car too expensive) food, yes gas, see lack of car credit card, yes
I also notice that the biggest difference between your costs and mine is self-inflicted. I don't know about where you're living, but here in Toronto, the cost of maintaining a car, insurance, etc would definitely put me into the red. Thats not even taking into account buying the car in the first place. Maybe you wouldn't have to work/stress/worry so much if you just made do with public transit like the rest of us students.

If it's any consolation, the retail business is booming these days. Maybe you can get a job working at American Eagle like I did or the Gap like my sister. I know that they are hiring right now for seasonal.

Mucus,
That sounds nice. Public transport, why didn't I think of that? Oh, yeah, there is NO decent public transport over here, plus, one of my jobs is delivering pizzas -- kind of hard to do on public transportation that doesn't even EXIST in the area I deliver in!!!!!! They probably look at your res and say"Damn, he can't even get a job as a cashier, we can't hire him."
Take a job almost anywhere, till you can find something else. It's easier to move then to get that good job if you have no resume.
Posted by CaptainMike XXIII (Member # 709) on :
my days as being overqualified to be a cashier might come to an end soon.. i've been revelling in the ease of making $10/hour +benefits +gainsharing to do a robot job, but it looks like i've been kicked upstairs. i'm getting close the the pay ceiling for a cashier position, and i've been told in no uncertain terms that a position has been created specifically for me and my talents. even though the company doesn't have a 'promotion' policy* per se, it seems i'll be heading upstairs (which, oddly enough, is downstairs in our building).
*basically, WFM doesnt promote people. if there is a higher job available, it is posted nationwide and anyone in the company could apply for it, and be interviewed. if somebody wants to stay where they are, they just don't apply, but i guess by not applying for supervisor, i've disappointed a few people.
Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :
But if you took public transportation, you wouldn't need a job to spend money to pay for your car, so everything would be okay.
Also, you haven't really gone for "economy" with your vehicle, have you Jeffy boy?

Its bad enough I've gotta beg a law firm to hire me part time just so I can do my required internship...and hoe they like me so much I'll get put on full time until next August. I currently work in retail, for satan (Wal-Mart) at a whopping $7/hr (after 3 years)...and they recently told me to forget about them scheduling around an internship. Bastards.

Well, haven't had any luck finding a server job. I hit TGI-Friday's, Ruby Tuesday, Bateman's Bistro, Applebee's ... shit! Forgot to hit Chili's!!!!
Anyway, I've got another batch of places to hit on Monday. In the meantime, I picked up mad hours at Papa John's this weekend, so hopefully I'll make a couple hundred bucks. I'll probably call Chi-Chi's in Bel Air (about a thirty minute DRIVE - public transportation don't go there!) on Tuesday and try and pick up hours if I don't have anything by then.

Okay, well ... I went out application hunting today. Went out to the White Marsh area to hit some resteraunts I didn't get my first couple passes through. The first place I saw was Bertucci's Brick Over Pizzaria, so I said to myself, "Gosh Omega is a prick."
Anyway, I pulled up, walked in, and asked if they were hiring servers. Hostess says "yep" and went off to grab an application. A manager named Carl came out, spoke to me briefly, and had me fill out the application at the bar. Kept asking me if I wanted a drink. Filled it out, and had a quick interview with Mary, the Service Manager. I go back tomorrow at 3pm for an interview with the General Manager, and if that goes well, I might go straight into orientation.
Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :
Well getting re-oriented, mmmmm, you'll be a Republican beofre we know it.....

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :
I think of Flare-ites off the board on occassion. Whenever I see a woman showing off her massive cleavage, I think to myself, "Gosh, I bet Topher would like a picture of her."
And whenever I see a dead squirrel squished into the pavement on campus, I think, "Wonderful. Another Snay in training."

Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
So I went back. Had an interview with the General Manager, a guy named Dave. The Bertucci's is a regional training store, so it's important that everything be to the "coporate standard." Anyway, I got the job, and thought of Siggy's sage advice (you know, regarding the didlo, the condom, and the shotgun - and no, I won't be putting that into practice, but thanks for sharing), and then got so bored during orientation (video after video) that I thought I would crazy, and thusly thought of Chucky Capps gunning down Omega with a Mac-10, or maybe dousing him in jalapeano juice after inflicting tens of thousands of paper cuts.
But in any regards, I got through orientation, and start training Saturday morning.
Hip-hip, hooorah!

I don't LIVE in New England. What IS it with the quality of southern schools? New England is north of New York & New Jersey.
Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :
What IS it with the quality of northern life that one cannot see that I'm continuing a running gag whereby I harrass for you being in New England simply to get a rise out of you similar to the one two months earlier when I accused you of personally thinning out the deer population of New England when, in reality, I know darn well where New England is?
Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
You do NOT know where New England is, because you're a product of the Texas school system, which is so crappy they actually indoctrinated you into enjoying Voyager.
I don't know HOW Omega came to think that Maryland was in New England. It must be the public school system again.
Oh well, nothing that can't be solved without that Mac 10.
