This was Veterns/Rememberance Day....

I didn't see anything here, so, to my fellow Vets in both contries, Thank You...

To those now serving, thank you for picking up where we left off.... Thank You....

Well I was serving in the Gulf during this little war. Does that count? I even get a nice shiny Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary medal out of it. [Big Grin] Then there was the whores in various countries but I'm not going to get into that here. [Wink]

Whores, war, near as damn it is suppose... [Wink]

Slightly more seriously:

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them

Wraith: "near as damn it is suppose"

My reading-midichlorians just jumped off a cliff.

Eneeway, Is this an international Veterans' Day or is it just for you americans?

My dad is a veteran, and today is his birthday too, as it happens.

I wonder... When's the holiday where we remember the thousands upon thousands of innocents slain by the US in all its undeclared wars over the past half-century or so?

Don't know that one.... Maybe you should petition to have one started....

Innocents Lost Day????

"Not All of Us Are Warmongering Murderers, Despite What Our Nonrepresentative Government Would Have You Believe" Day.

A little long but I guess it would work....

Although I don't think Baloo, Hobbes, Matrix, and Toadkiller (dispite the name) feel that they are war mongering murders.... I know I don't feel that way about myself, most of the time, although there are times that I do feel like I should just lash out at those that haven't a clue.....

We volunteered to serve this country so you can spout this drivel, you really should thank us.... [Wink]

I honor any man willing to put his life on the line and face death on the battlefield and ridicule at home, whether he agrees with his country's policies or not.

Speaking of flame-broiled, what a disappointment the Burger King Texas Double Whopper is. It's just a friggin' regular Whopper with double meat, double cheese, and jalapeo peppers. So very disappointing, indeed.

"Although I don't think Baloo, Hobbes, Matrix, and Toadkiller (dispite the name) feel that they are war mongering murders."

I'm not claiming they are. Nor am I claiming that everyone who joins the military is looking to kill some "damn for'ners". I was just saying that the government has established a reputation for using the military for primarily unjust purposes, and it tends to make us look bad as a country.

Of course, my original statement was intended to be mainly sardonic, though, when you think about it, doesn't it seem strange that our military has killed so many innocent people over the years and we hardly acknowledge the fact, while we actually have a holidy to celebrate the people who killed them?

I won't argue the POV of the Gov't, since it seems to be right on track, but I was hoping, as 359 suggested, to have a nice little thread acknowledging those that have and are serving in the military.

The fact that many innocent people have died at the military's hand, as mistakes or not, has little bearing, on the thousands that have served without killing anyone. Do you blame your hubcaps when you service engine light comes on?

Instead of focusing on the deaths caused by the military look at the lives saved by the works of the Air Force Para Rescue, and the medics and corpsmen from the Army and Navy, or even the combat troops that served in NYC after 9-11....

Here's a thought for you: acknowledge BOTH the lives saved by and the lives lost through military action, or don't acknowledge at all. Or is that too much to ask?

Yes - I would agree, and there will always be both lives saved and lives lost. Hopefully, we (as a species) will eventually learn to act in a manner that minimizes the losses.

Oh, and Hobbes - as the resident preventive medicine guy, just let me know where I need to mail those condoms....or the meds..... [Eek!]

Thanks Ritten.

Of course not. My point was what Cartman said. You have to give equal time. Don't say "yay, us!" while sweeping all the bad stuff under the carpet.

Pretend I said something exceedingly witty regarding carpet bombs to go with that "sweeping under the carpet" bit, since I couldn't actually think of anything that wouldn't sound stupid.

Carpet bombs are made by Raid, to remove pesky fleas and other mini vermin....

I do think about those killed that shouldn't have been, that is one of the reasons I do not, and will not own a weapon of any sort, I know the damage that can be done, both to the intended target and un-intended.....

Welcome Toadkiller.

Rememberence day in Australia... 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 1918.

AKA Armistace Day.

Australia and New Zealand also commemorate ANZAC day on the 25th of April. The anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.
