Well my ship, the USS Fitzgerald DDG-62, came in this weekend. It'll be another 2 weeks before it goes out again. I've met most of the people I will be working with and they all seem pretty nice. I won't be able to get online... well not here anyway while deployed anyway. They have their own types of internet, but it's primarily for checking email or other "official" purposes.

Well, you shouldn't want to. Find yourself some local ass and drink yourself under the table, is that not what the Navy men do?
Everything I know has come from TV. Or Richard Marcinko Novels. He has a foul mouth, but was in the Navy, so I'd like to think I know how it goes.
Fuck hell damn!

Good luck on the deployment. Do you know where you'll be going and what you'll be doing (if you're allowed to say anything, that is)?

WOW Hobbes. Congratulations again. Our own little Hobbes... all grown up!
What CAN you do out at sea? Do you get TV? Will they let you watch Enterprise?
If you're ever docked in Brisbane - send us an e-mail!
Do navy ships have dedication plaques with mottos etc?
Do they have arboretums and a gymnasium and an annoying ships CMO's son who will end up being an acting ensign and then an ensign!?! And then meat one of hollywood's hottest actresses - and then leave - and then ascend to a different plance of existance - and then comeback... for a wedding and not saying anything!?!
Woah! Huh Hmm... Drops back down to reality!
heh heh
Bon Voyage... well in two weeks. (typed Voyager! )

I've known Hobbes online for a number of years and finally met him in person last week (drove up here from San Diego -- like 80 miles). He's a really nice guy.
He left himself logged into Flare. I wanted to prank around but I'm too nice.

Riiiight... well my West Pact deployment is scheduled for March, however it could start as early as January thanks to that idoit who is our president wanting to start conflict with everyone in the Middle East. I guess his daddy did it so he's has to give it a shot.
When I'm at sea mostly you work, one thing I've noticed on Star Trek is they're always working... same thing. My ship relies on only 300 people to keep it working 24/7. There is a TV in our berthing, but I don't know if it gets cable while deployed.
Also, I haven't been able to watch Enterprise since I joined in March. Sean at lcarscom.net was nice enough to send me the entire first season on CDs though, so I'm at least caught up that far. I'll probably just buy season DVD box sets when they come out like I do for my other shows I like so I can watch it on my laptop.
I'm certain the Fitzgerald has a dedication plaque, I haven't seen it yet though since it's probably on the bridge and I haven't been there yet either. As for it's motto, "Protect Your People." Sounds kinda lame I think, but it comes from it's namesake, LT Fitzgerald who lost his life while providing cover fire so his men could evacuate an attack in Vietnam.
There's a small gym, but no arboretums. And thankfully no over eager officer brat whining about being an acting ensign.
Oh, and after driving cross-country 2,707 miles, 80 miles was nothing Wes.

Careful there, Hobbes. That's a superior officer you're talking about there.
Anyway, as I said before, good luck and take care of yourself out there.

Yeah, wouldn't calling the highest-ranking member of your chain of command an "idiot" be considered insubordination? Couldn't you be court-martialed, or something? Or just locked up indefinitely w/o a trial or legal representation?
Terrorist.

Which proves what my grandma said... that anytime you point a finger at someone, you've got three pointing back at yourself.

Well, if you bend your wrist to the right and curve your finger, you can have one finger pointing at someone and the other three fingers pointing at the guy next to you.

As long as he addresses the superior with the proper respect he can say whatever he pleases....
I told a sargeant to go go fuck himself...
So a "Mister President, with all due respect for your office, you, sir, are an idiot." would be acceptable...

"...anytime you point a finger at someone, you've got three pointing back at yourself." I don't know about you, but my fingers point into the palm of my hand. So, really, they're pointing off to the side of me.

Found the dedication plaque, outside the enlisted mess deck.
U.S.S. FITZGERALD GUIDED MISSLE DESTROYER LT. WILLIAM C. FITZGERALD AUGUST 7, 1967
BUILT BY THE MEN AND WOMEN OF BATH IRON WORKS BATH, MAINE
KEEL LAID FEBRUARY 9, 1993 LAUNCHED JANUARY 29, 1994 COMMISSIONED OCTOBER 14, 1995
Again on the uniform issue. We have several. Two summer whites, 1 dress white 1 working white. Same for winter blues. Then there's utilities which are dark blue pants and light blue shirt. Finally dark blue jumpsuits, kind of like those on Enterprise.

I was about to post something stupid like needing a good amount of closet space for all those uniforms. Then I remembered that you probably aren't allowed to have anything that isn't a uniform or a pair of pajamas on the ship.

Damn I hated the whites. They were the result of a consipiracy by uniform manufacturers I say. Working blues were the best. Classy looking--no bell bottoms, and near the end of my enlistment they finally let us wear garrison caps instead of the stupid whitecaps.
Of course I managed to get through my enlistment without ever setiting foot on a navy ship. Good luck.

I have a few pairs of clothes. Ask Matrix, if one thing is enforced in boot camp it's how to fold clothes so they barely take up any space.
There are no more bellbottoms. The dungaree's as they use to be called were redesigned, now they're just regular dark blue slacks. I prefer the working whites myself. Sure the dixie cup sucks to wear, but it looks professional. The working blues otoh look oddly Nazi-like to me.
