Well this is my last post. As of tomorrow my ship will be going underway. It's not yet clear if we'll be returning to San Diego before West Pac or not. So far I'm being told we may not return by the end of the month. In which case it could be 6 or more months before I can post again. We have e-mail aboard a ship, but no internet. While underway internet is reserved to officers only. If anyone actually would like to contact me for whatever reason my email is [email protected].
I just thought I'd mention it incase you notice me not posting for a few months and think I'm dead or something. So until I return, good bye. I look forward to returning some time soon.

Good luck, and remember you joined the Navy to see the world, and 70% of it is covered by water... So a lot of the places will look alike...

LET'S HAVE A PARTY!!!! YEAHHHH!!!!
Alright, I'm only kidding. But hey, get some pics will ya?

Worst spy ever.
Buh bye, Hobbes.

Well, you are in the military. For all we know, you still could be dead anytime soon.

Good luck

Bon Voyage Hobbes!!
And if you're worried about what to do - think about what Captain Picard would do! I'd say Quark - but you might get into trouble that way!

Back in San Diego for a few days.
Well if we pull into cool foreign ports I'll take pics. But thanks to Bush it's not going to be like most West Pacs, it's just straight to the Gulf.

Can you bring me back a torpedo? Tamohawk Cruise Missile? or maybe a machine gun? Please?
Have fun. And remember, chocolate and smokes are as good as cash in there. Oh wait, that's prison...
Posted by Fleet-Admiral Michael T. Colorge (Member # 144) on :
Well Hobbes... good luck onboard. Remember that the captain goes down with the ship... the crew can haul ass and evac.
Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :
Prison ... Navy, same thing. Well almost, prison is slightly better than the Navy. Ok so maybe it's the other way around.

::sigh:: How the gay sailor jokes never get old...
At this rate I could be gone now 06Jan03. There's a slim chance of coming back to San Diego, but I don't yet know.
Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :
Woohoo! I'm not leaving yet after all!! Not until at least March 1.
Posted by Matrix (Member # 376) on :
I'm not entirely sure if I'm going on a cruise or not myself. They are not telling me where the USS Stennis is. All they tell me is if I am, and they are already out, I go out on a flight to the nearest port where then they fly me to the ship. If not, then I'll be staying on Oceana doing what E-2s do... scrub, and clean.
Posted by Wraith (Member # 779) on :
You realise they're probably not telling you where it is in case you tell us, bearing in mind that anyone on these boards could be an Iraqi spy or even Saddam himself?
Posted by Matrix (Member # 376) on :
They already know there are 6 carriers out there, 5 in the Gulf right now. 3 are right in it, and two are standing by.
I doubt knowing which carrier is deployed would matter considering that each carrier is roughly much equal to each other. Not only that, it's not that much worse than what the mdeia does all the time right now.
Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :
The Stennis is out, I was watching it on the satellite monitor in CIC during my watches.
Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :
loose lips, guys, loose lips...
Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :
Wait, who gets your car?
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
"loose lips, guys, loose lips..."
...are fun if you can find them?
Posted by Matrix (Member # 376) on :
It's not like I'm directly telling you what the ship's capabilities are. Besides, I don't have the security clearence for it. It's not that hard to find out which ship it is based on the hull number.
Now if I told you how fast each ship goes, how to make a nuclear reactor and such, then that would be a different matter altogether.
Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :
Correction... I drove downtown and saw the USS Nimitz CVN-68 and USS John C. Stennis CVN-74 are both in at North Island Naval Air Station.
I'm fully aware of OPSEC. I'm an EW, one of the most classified jobs in the Navy.
Posted by Matrix (Member # 376) on :
Where are you stationed right now?

You meant to say...that modern US warships potentially can travel faster than...*GASP*...32 knots?? Which is the same damn speed ships could do in 1942 already????
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
Why would anyone care if you told us how to make a nuclear reactor. I'm sure we could already find that on the Internet, anyway.
Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
Yes: like here.

USS Fitzgerald DDG-62. Right now we're inport at 32nd St. Naval Station awaiting West Pac. When we're deployed only officers get internet, the most enlisted crew get is MS Outlook mail.
Posted by Bernd (Member # 6) on :
Maybe you will get internet access if you volunteer to rework the ship's website.
I don't think the page transition is so funny. Looks like the ship is targeted through the periscope of a submarine...
Posted by CaptainMike (Member # 709) on :
hmm. that site is soooo 1998. ani gifs and scrolling text in the status bar.
actually i would be worried if the military was good at web design. i'd prefer they be good at, i don't know, sailing and defending, and stuff like that, instead.
BTW, the bios of the CO and staff.. is that kosher? my U.S.S. Enterprise article in National Geographic says that because of the 'conflicts' they aren't photographing or naming crewmembers on active vessels.. edit: the NG article is from November 2001, when the E was involved in Afghanistan so that explains that

As it turns out, my so called welcome aboard package is old (way old). My squadron is not longer on the USS Stennis but the USS George Washington. My LPO, AME2 Bannard, who is left yesterday will be push for me, and two other shipmates who are shipping out with me on the same date to go on night shifts and directly to the shop.
Very good news for me at least.

Well, if you only get outlook mail - you still have access to newsgroups.

Well my friends, the orders are in. This nice little break inport San Diego was great but I'm leaving for the Persian Gulf March 1st.

You know, I'd love to... but that aint gonna happen. The website was created by the ADP guys, they're the Information Systems Technologist (IT) networking people on our ship. They of course give themselves internet access underway while restricting it for everyone else.
Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :
Sounds like you picked the wrong line of work in the Navy, Hobbes!
Good luck, and watch out for those cloaked missiles! The UN inspectors haven't found those Iraqi cloaking devices yet, but they probably will soon enough...

While you're in port in Barhrain, remember the REAL reason why Islamic law makes their women wear veils & burqas--becasue they're hot as fuck & they don't want us stealing who good elements of their gene pool they have.
Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :
Nah... I'd rather not be an IT. For starters, their rating badge sucks I much prefer the EW rating badge.
Well I'm still posting which means I'm still in San Diego. Yeah, Pacific Fleet decided to order us out on the 1st without the approval of the Secretary of Defense. So instead I'm leaving March 3rd. First stop, Hawaii. Once we pull in we should have internet again, so I'll post there. I plan to buy a digital camera. I still get email ( [email protected] - please email, it's my only connection to the outside world ) so I'll send those pics to see the exploits of a young American sailor getting drunk in foreign ports.
The fact that they're sending my battle group out to the Gulf should be a big enough clue that Bush is on the verge of going to war.
Anyway, until next time...

Sorry my life has been too fubar for more time to hang out -- but mabye next time you are back we can do somethin again.
Don't pick up the soap, its a trap.

What I meant was, he's done talking. By sending us out there he intends to attack and probably has a date picked. I know you all talk about it on the Flameboard but I never really read that forum.
