A lot of you might not know that this city is our nation's capital - not Sydney.

In the past 12 hours there have been terrible bushfires that have devestated Canberra. In 12 hours (and at last count) nearly 400 homes and 2 lives lost!!

Not that Sydney hasn't been threatening to burn down too.

Maybe you guys should think up some different names for your sports teams.

Get it? Get it?

Hey, wait a minute. Townsville?

Things seem to be going from bad to worse up there.

Dandenong Rangers huh, I live about 15 minutes from the Dandenongs - its a mountain range. Nice place, good eateries.

Wow, you DID?
Hell, I like you. You can come over to my house and *u** my sister!

I just wanted an excuse to quote Colonel Pogue.

'Australian police hold two over bush fires'- from the Telegraph last time you had big fires over there. Talk about tough policing...

Still, if anyone knows how to deal with criminals it should be the Aussies [Big Grin] [Big Grin] .

And i knew the capital was Canberra as well, so [Razz]

Wraith, that was funny...

Where exactly are you Daryus? Melbourne or in rural Victoria? It says that there are fires burning in the North East of the state.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Well at last I hear there are now 4 confirmed dead, 360 injured and 402 houses burnt to the ground. CRAZY stuff.

We've been seeing wild images from Canberra on the news, very terrible.

We had the exact opposite some weeks ago - terrible flooding.

Should have sent some of that water to Australia's firefighters...

Sorry, that was in bad taste, but what can you do. The weather situation all around the globe seems to get crazier every year. Storms, fire, flooding... Terrible. [Frown]

Oh, I also knew that Canberra was the capital. is that offer for your sister still on?? [Wink]

Colonel Pogue?

It was Sergeant Hartman.

The Mount Stromolo observatory (I don't know if any have heard of it) 9 telescopes + heaps of equipment + a device that was just finished and was going to NASA to be used in space was totally destroyed by the fires [Frown]

The telescopes and the instruments etc were just molten metal after the fires decimated the observatory.

There was an old telescope there from the Ninteenth century there, that has gone.

The Mount Stromolo observatory has discovered some remarkable things about the universe over the years. It recently found the oldest star in our universe. I'm sure there is a post over at sci.space.news.

Terrible stuff.

There's a Wolf 359 joke in there somewhere. 8)

You'd think they'd fireproof the observatory...

A news story with picture.

Also: Australian bush fires closed Deep Space Network.

They had the Australian Open on the TV at work today. There was a shot of the sky & you could see massive darkness, even at wherever the hell it is. The smoke's obviously affecting your air quality.

The Australian Open is held in Melbourne.

You should see footage from Canberra - you can tell each time it's footage from there because everything is yellow/brown.

At last count 451 homes were lost in Canberra 4 people dead hundreds injured. They showed a man with burns to half of his body in hospital - who was caught out and just saved his daughter in time before the petrol tank of their truck exploded.

You don't get it do you, the observatory was turned to cinders, the telescopes were reduced to molten metal. The flames were an inferno being fanned by 100kmph winds, the temperature was like 40C - well over 100F for you Americans.

I don't think they could have 'saved' or 'proofed' those telescopes.

actually, the government controlled media has trained us to be unconcerned with death and pain, unless of course it is americans doing the dying and being hurt, in which case we are obligated to murder and steal.

LOL! What? Like the Rodney King LA riots? [Smile]

There are now bushfires raging through NE Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales.

I heard something about a 300km firefront building up. But yeah, things down here are very smoggy.
