For those running Seti, 3.08 is out. Looks like part of the gang is still going.

Krenim, my average time is dropping quickly. I went from over 100 hours per, to 5 1/2 hours. Bet I catch you.

My little sister is WAY into Seti at home - she's getting a new laptop, and all she keeps talking about is how much faster her computer will process it now..... [Razz]

Heh. I was an enthusiastic supporter of SETI@home a few years ago. Unfortunately, their implementation of the screen saver version for OS X is rather lacking, because they refuse to make a version that can be integrated with the system's screen saver module. That system panel has the ability to require a password before the screen saver is turned off -- something that I consider important for my laptop security. Their "recommended" solution is to run both screen savers. Go figure. [Roll Eyes]

I'm thinking of installing the Darwin-compatable command line client and a freeware GUI menu extra to control it, but I haven't worked up the interest to go to the effort of going through the relatively difficult (and potentially dangerous) process of installing it, since I'm still a relative newbie when it comes to Unix.

At any rate, I haven't had much of an opportunity to use SETI anyway since I got my iBook, my first laptop. It's better to shut the case and put it to sleep in most situations. And I won't leave it running and awake all night, because the processor is a little loud in a quiet bedroom.

I couldn't believe how much faster this computer could do the scans.

If you can run it in the background, and leave the screen saver off, it will run a lot faster. I've got enough RAM now that I don't notice Seti running.

The last still-functional part of TNO: The SETI@home group...

And I'm sure you will catch up to me, Kosh, but not for the reason you think. Previous computers that I've had the program on weren't up to the task, and thus they took forever to finish up a data unit. And I mean forever. This computer is going through them in no time. However, I think this computer will be offline for most of the summer, allowing more than sufficient time to catch up.

I run it on my main PC (as yet unpacked) and belong to the uk.media.tv.scifi.farscape group - or I did, unfortunately when I changed PCs they seem to have lost my info, and won't let me log back in to rejoin; they still qute happily keep sending me data packets to process, but God knows what happens to them when the results get sent. . .

200?! The idea of 200 Lee Kellys (Kellies?) in the world is bad enough, let alone at least 200 of us using Seti@Home. . .

Feh. I prefer to donate my spare CPU time to finding a cure for cancer.

I looked that web site over. I may start running that here at work.

Krenim: Sorry to hear it. Hope you are up and running again soon.

If there are 200 Lee Keleys running Seti, how many are there total?

I don't think they're necessarily all "Lee Kelly." I searched for "Simon Sizer" and got plenty of hits, but all of them were just Simon, not Sizer. I'm reasonably certain I'm the only one. Anyway, some other distributed computing projects and collections of projects:

Incidently, it seems the name Simon is more common in Britain.

There's a ton of Lee Kellys on ICQ, too, though a bunch of them seem to be women from China or Taiwan.

I Googled once, lots of girls with the surname Kelly and middle name Lee. . . Even a couple of actresses, Kristen Lee Kelly and Laura Lee Kelly I think. A sculptor, but we knew about him. Any page that has a list of pornstars, since you got, er, somebody Lee and Kelly O'Dell. I'd probably do a project to locate all the Lee Kellys in the world if Dave Gorman hadn't had the idea first (to find Dave Gormen that is, not Lee Kellys). 8)

Scroll down on this page, and search by the e-mail address you gave them.

Slight problem, I changed my email recently. So although I've located my account by that email, I can't get a reminder of the password. And I've tried every password I've ever used.

They give you some random password, so you wont remember it.

Wonderful. And these are the people who hope to establish communications with other worlds? Good luck. . .

Amazingly, I've found my password. I didn't even know I had emails from that far back. . .

Now join the fast rising TNO team.

With K and I both having new computers, and 359 already over 300, we are getting them done now. I think even Elim is back at it. I'l have to look again to be sure.

Posted by Kosh (Member # 167) on :

Oops, I see you are already in a group.

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :

Heh... is TNO even an active place anymore? Why not rename it for Flare instead?

Is it possible to switch groups? Maybe I should join up... I'd instantly have all you guys blown away. [Razz]

TNO is pretty much dead, save for the SETI@home group. Yes, the name can be changed. Perhaps I'll do so soon.

I believe that you can switch groups. And having more members (and results) is always a good thing. [Smile]

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

Actually, I'd eventually catch up to you, since my computer completes a work unit in 2/3rds the time it takes yours.

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :

Maybe... but by that time, I'll have bought a new computer, and I'm sure that whatever processor chip ends up being called the G5 will end up smoking yours away... [Razz] (Kidding, kidding!)

I got an e-mail form Gepta001.

suck it.

Heh... that's because I took a year's break. (Not trying to make childish competition here, just explaining. [Wink] ) When I bought my iBook in November 2001, I stopped using screen savers, because a laptop needs them even less than a desktop model. I thought about running it in the background on occasion, but it's always too much of a bother to remember to turn it on. Now, I've got the Unix client running, without any GUI save for a tiny menu icon that lets me turn it on and off, and also set the "nice" level for background processing (meaning priority over other programs).

Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :

kidding, of course. (for what it's worth, I've also had at least a year-long break)

And MM, I'm on your side. This was primarily accomplished using two G4s. It's too bad it won't incorporate into the OSX screen-saver program.

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :

Yeah, that's been my biggest complaint -- and actually was part of the reason why I wasn't using it for a while. Since I'm at college, I wanted the ability to use the password protection on the screensaver, to complement the other OS X security features. SETI's recommendation is to run two screensavers at the same time. [Roll Eyes]

Anyway, I'm using the command-line client now, along with a very handy utility called SETI Menu to control it. PM me if you'd like some pointers for setting it up. [Smile]
