So...WHAT DOES 'WOOT' MEAN??? I understand it is an exclamation of joy, celebration or used as a compliment. But l337, leet, comes from "elite", so where the hell does W00t derive from?
I must know...or so help me god I'll shut down teh internet!

Though the earliest records of its inception have since been lost in the maelstrom of time, some vital pieces of information remain, and are now closely guarded by the Elders. w00t is a hacker morph of "root" - referring to the exclamation that they had gained root access to a computer they were hacking. Examples:
"OMFG i pwned u so bad!! w00t w00t!"
"w00t i r0x0r3d ur b0x0r!!"
"i set up xwind0ze 2 look li3k teh w00t o/s form hackers!"

Jay/Kay, it sounds like Truth alright. But then, why does the leetspeak proclaim that you should add appendages like "0r" after a word, making it longer than it has to be? I mean, would'nt "rocks" as in "Wow, Hanoi sure rocks!" be more correct with just "r0X" than "r0xx0r"?
About "Young One", I think it's actually opposite, I'm starting to get senile from my long exposure to the world of computers. When I first encountered game-chatting, in a lan-game of Doom ten years ago, the most alien word was "frag". :-)

Ah, the oft mis-interpreted and ever-evolving rules of l33tsp34k boggle even the brightest minds. In the ancient past, they favored the use of "r0x", for it was commonly held that brevity of speech should outweigh and restrain the dormant urge to impress the large but shrinking crowd of non-computer-savvy users with grammatical art that was indecipherable to anyone but themselves.
But as with so many things, the notions of yore slowly fell by the wayside. Not unlike workers who felt their livelihood threatened by automation during the industrial revolution, or painters who suddenly found their style obsolete and no longer respected in a world that was crying for change, those fluent in l33tsp34k rebelled against the system the veterans had helped deliver! Thus l33tsp34k v2 was born, with a set of guidelines that differed from the original like night differs from day and fire differs from water. A new era of linguistic Enlightenment was ushered in. No longer was clarity of speech promoted, no, henceforth, the aggressive proliferation of the language by abusing its old structure to the greatest extent was to be the sp34k3rs' primary goal, which they have met with alarming success.
And so, one is hard-put to find a single occurence of "r0x" in modern texts, the vast majority of l33tsp34k3rs preferring instead the v2 derivative "r0x0r" for emphasis of expression.

Oh yeah, Doom LAN deathmatches kicked ass bigtime! :-) I'd trade my gaming soul to go back to late '93 and relive those days, man. Ah, the joy of geting a rocket or chainsaw shoved up my virtual butt for the first time by my ex-friend, pure magic.

I was always under the impression that "woot" was just a variant of "woo", a more traditional exclamation of excitement. The zeroes, of course, were just to make it 1337.
As for stuff like "r0x0r", "sux0r", and so on... The first one was "h4x0r", which meant "hacker", not "hack". It's just that somehow people started using it as a verb (presumably, "h4x0r" just sounded cooler than "h4x"). Then it was just carried over to other words ending in "ck".

There was a period, back in 2000, maybe, where my roomate and I took up saying "h4x0r" (I suppose it'd be Hack-Zor) anytime something decent happened. It did not last long.
Internet lingo does not exist to be spoken aloud.
Though, a JeffK cry of "WFT?" does good once in a while.
