i just saw on the news that in light of being involved in a lot of prosecutions and other hijinx associated with unmoderated chat, MSN is closing up shop on a large percentage of its chat services..

So what exactly does this mean? Death of MSN Messenger?

No. MSN chatrooms are going down. Well, except for the ones in the US, Canada and some other place. I've never used MSN chatrooms (or any other chatroom), so I can't be bothered by it.

MSN Messenger will keep on going. But it will change protocol on October 14th, to shut off all third party MSN clients. Were it not that the new Trillian is already fully compatible with the new protocol.

Children's charities have welcomed the move as a positive step to ensuring children's safety online.

But major net service providers have criticised the action as "irresponsible" and say it is driven by economic concerns rather than keeping children safe.

Net experts have also warned it could drive vulnerable young people to other unmoderated chatrooms on the net.

Well, duh...
