i just saw on the news that in light of being involved in a lot of prosecutions and other hijinx associated with unmoderated chat, MSN is closing up shop on a large percentage of its chat services..

No. MSN chatrooms are going down. Well, except for the ones in the US, Canada and some other place. I've never used MSN chatrooms (or any other chatroom), so I can't be bothered by it.
MSN Messenger will keep on going. But it will change protocol on October 14th, to shut off all third party MSN clients. Were it not that the new Trillian is already fully compatible with the new protocol.
