As you know from my "Ouch" topic I crashed my 1990 Nissan 240SX. I really liked that car, but now I have another. Which I'm proud to present:

My 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer ES. 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission, 120 horse power. I've always wanted my own new car that no one else has owned, so new it only had 27 miles on it after my test drive.

The engine is the same as the 02-03 Lancers which means there is plenty of modifications available that can increase it's power. I really wanted a yellow Lancer Ralliart with 160 hp but unfortunately it was little outside my price range.

A five-speed manual! You're on The Path to automotive enlightenment, Navy Boy. B)

I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Colt. An older brother of your car. Which is nice.

Yes, manual is definitely the way to go. Not looking forward to having to drive an automatic when I visit the States, but we found it completely impossible to hire a Mustang convertible with a manual gearbox. 8(

I don't like the new grill on the '04 Lancer, the '02 - '03 front end was much cleaner and nice.

They're both nothing compared to a balls out Lancer Evolution. 280hp bitches.

In my neverending quest for a new car, I've actually contemplated the Mitsubishi Lancer... it's on my "To be test-driven" list, so as soon as the weather gets better, the car dealerships will get to know me again [Wink]

Does it feel big though? Probably does, compared to the 240sx you were used to, but I just don't know if the car will be big enough for me... I kinda want something like a Accord or Mazda6 in size....

We'll see....

Yay for you though! New cars are the best! Let me know when you're ready to put a stereo in [Wink]

Lee,

After you've been driving in the States for about, I don't know, five minutes, you'll find it rather hard to believe that other countries are stupid enough to rent cars to Americans when we come to invade ...

... I mean, visit.

The Lancer definately feels bigger than my old 240SX. Especially on turns, my 240SX was shorter and closer to the road so I was hugging corners at high speed. On my Lancer I have to go slower, I think I took turns as fast like in my 240 it would tip. Maybe if I lowered it and improved the suspension. Otherwise it drives great, a little sluggish with only 120hp though.

As for the 02-03 Lancer, I don't like the grill. There's bodykits available though. But the thin silver thing looks like a thong on the grill. I actually went into the dealership with the intention of getting a yellow 03 Lancer OZ Rally. But there weren't any available. And as for the Evo VIII, well $30,000 it bit out of my price range.

I'm gonna be learning how to drive a stick soon.

Posted by LOA (Member # 49) on :

*learned how to drive a stick on the day she bought her current car* Now THAT is something I don't recommend for everyone.... what a day...... *shakes head* When I tried to drive it off the lot, it took me like 6 tries to get it... every guy working there had come outside to watch..... that was the begging of the longest drive home of my life [Razz]

Then, I had a friend at my house waiting for me, and he spent the rest of the day driving around with me, almost 150 milea, lurching all the way.... the next morning we both woke up feeling like we had whiplash [Wink]

The moral of the story: Good luck, Tora! [Big Grin]

I'm going to buy a new car this June.
It's a BMW 330 Cd Coupe with a six-cylinder 205hp Diesel engine. (with 6-speed manual transmission)

Now some may laugh at the idea of driving a Diesel, especially when it's a Coupe, but no other car in that price range can match the performance and "fun-to-drive" feeling IMHO. [Big Grin]

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

Oh, once you drive a diesel you may never go back. Especially going uphill, there's one hill near us that every car I've ever been up it in has struggled to do sixty. And looking around us it's plain that most other cars are struggling too. Yet our 2 litre TDI just happily thunders up there at 70.

Posted by Austin Powers (Member # 250) on :

I am currently driving a 2 litre TDI and have been doing so for seven years. The engine is fantastic and the fuel consumption is unbelievably low.

And the BMW I have been talking about can do everything my current TDI can - only even better...

"One can dream..."

And one can work!

"Now some may laugh at the idea of driving a Diesel, especially when it's a Coupe..."

Well, ten years ago I would have. Long and hard. But since the current generation diesels at long last produce both tolerable amounts of torque AND tolerable amounts of horsepower, I'll refrain from degrading your car too much. B)

(You don't want to know what I drive, BTW. But I will say that it is French.)

Diesel engines are great because they have gobs and gobs of torque. That's why they are used so much for trucks.

However diesels are rare in America. Jeep will be introducing a diesel Liberty next year, and Mercedes-Benz will follow with it's E320CDi.

Posted by Austin Powers (Member # 250) on :

Well, one of the reasons why Diesels are becoming even more popular in Germany now than they already used to be is not only the immense torque, but also the extremely great fuel-efficiency. Something that doesn't seem to matter all that much in the US, but you should see our prices at the gas stations - it would make your eyes pop out!

Along with the rest of your cranial entrails.

I don't let the prices stop me, of course. The Cartmobile must guzzle on! B)

Which prices are you talking about?
You live in the US, don't you?

"You live in the US, don't you?"

I have killed for less, Mystery Boy. B)

So, erh, no, I do not. I'm a Yuroppy in heart and, uh, mind. Or something.

Posted by The359 (Member # 37) on :

Diesels are certainly a nice fuel alternative since you get better mileage and diesel prices are a lot lower in the US. So instead of having to go for one of those hybrids which lack a lot of power, you get the torque of a diesel with fuel efficency nearly the same.

Gas here is $1.65 a gallon for regular unleaded, and that's on the Navy base. Out in town it's about $1.85.

My Lancer is still stock, that'll quickly change. Right now I'm tight on money, so I've only bought a couple accessory dress-up items. Ralliart is Mitsubishi's after-market company so I'm getting some of their stuff. Nothing major, seatbelt pads, an oil cap, radiator cap, and chrome license plate frame. I also bought a Momo Combat shift knob (leather/silver) and plan to buy a Momo Fighter steering wheel. As you can tell, I'm going with a black/silver interior scheme. Engine performance will include an Injen cold-air intake and GReddy exhaust.

Ummm...........

And what about the stereo?

Posted by Austin Powers (Member # 250) on :

@Cartman: So where do you live? I went by the location you give in your profile - I only read "Colorado", so I didn't see the Southpark joke at first.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :

Well LOA I've never been big on car audio as much as performance. I've considered getting a new deck, something capable of playing MP3s, as for speakers the stock ones are fine for right now.

Posted by LOA (Member # 49) on :

*blink* I see.

Hmm. *contemplates* Weird.

Well, let me know before you buy a deck.... we'll make sure you get a good one AND don't get ripped off......! *hint* Never pay full price..... [Razz]

So I went to Best Buy looking at decks and speakers. I'm not expert on the subject of car audio, I buy a deck because it looks cool. The salesgirl recommended Kenwood or Pioneer over Sony. As I said though, I tend to be drawn to cool looking ones like a deer in Jeff's jeep headlights. I think this is the one I want (or looks just like it) Sony Xplod CDX-M800. As for speakers, they recommened Rockford Fosgate FRC4306.

I installed my Injen cold air intake to increase horsepower. Next comes a GReddy Evo exhaust system for even more power.

Posted by LOA (Member # 49) on :

No, no, no. No. No way. No.

Should I say it again? Big Fat No.

No Sony Xplod... None. Trust me, no.

You're MUCH better off with a Kenwood (prefer Excelon) or a Pioneer Premier. Trust me. I've had Sony Xplod products in the past, and unfortunately they are aptly named. They explode. Fizzle. Burn. Fry. Whatever... it's no good.

Now... I looked up the deck at Bestbuy.com. They want $299.00 for it.... are you willing to pay that amount? Because if you are, then here's what you need to do.....

Don't shop at Best Buy.

Go elsewhere.

You're in San Diego, right? Hello!!! CALIFORNIA!!!! Car Stereo MECCA! Shop around at the local car audio dealers.... you said you're into looks mostly? Find a dealer that sells Alpine or high-end Kenwood (Excelon, baby...!) and experience the difference. Even high end pioneer or an Eclipse deck will make you happy. A couple of decks to pay special attention to:

Alpine:
CDA 9807 - $279.99
CDA9811 - $329.99 (this deck is the lower end of my deck - CDA9815 - ..... VERY enjoyable....)

Pioneer Premier:
DEHP650 - $299.99
DEHP750MP - $369.99

Eclipse:
CD5423 - $299.99

And any Kenwood Excelon deck that has a display that makes you happy.... :-)

Pay attention also to this: Do you want Satellite radio? In my world, it's a must. If you do, get a satellite ready deck, or you'll be shelling out big bucks later on.

Let me know if you need more help... I'll repond quicker this time... promise....

And please... don't buy the Sony.... just dont...................

One thing that always puzzles me - car stereo fanatics aside: why do you tune your cars, to get more horsepower etc. in a country with a 70mph speed limit? [Wink]

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

Well, that's a legal limit, not a physical one...

And, on the other note, anyone who buys a stereo for looks has something improperly wired in their brain.

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

So we can reach the speed limit quicker, of course.

Speaking of which, I almost hit one Friday night in my Celica, but I honked and he ran away.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :

Uh right, the speed limit. I always like to think of those as more of a recommendation than anything.

Okay, so what you're saying is no Xplod. Well it's not like I'm getting this tomorrow or anything. First I'm going to get the GReddy exhaust. Then I'll save up for a deck and speakers. The one thing I definately will need it to do is play CDs with music in MP3 format. And kind of blend in with the silver interior of my car.

Well I just bought a 2004 Toyota Corolla S in a nice burgandy color. I think I like this car the best from the others I had... that and the gas milage and compactness it has. It's fun to drive.

I'm a bit worried when I see a thread titled "my new toy" and the name next to is says: Fleet-Admiral Michael T. Colorge

[Smile]

Posted by Austin Powers (Member # 250) on :

I'm rather more worried by the thought of a man driving a burgundy colored car... [Big Grin]

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

Nothing wrong with burgundy. Now pink, that's real cause for concern. B)

Posted by Fleet-Admiral Michael T. Colorge (Member # 144) on :

Well I thought that burgundy is a garish color for a gay boy to be driving around in, espeically with the fact that LAPD likes to pull over red cars near my campus. But it's growing on me.

Posted by Tora Ziyal (Member # 53) on :

The new Honda Accord coupe in red is really HOT. And this is coming from someone who doesn't usually ogle over cars.
