Okay, I have a laptop and a desktop. They won't talk. Neither a crossover cable nor an ad-hoc wireless network will cooperate. They recognize each other, but while one side will ping the other, the pings won't go both ways. Which side will ping and which won't varies from time to time. The symptoms are exactly the same for both wired and wireless. Both are running XP Home, installed from the same CD. All hardware works under other circumstances, and both setups have worked before, and I've made no changes that I can imagine would affect this. Any ideas, guys? I'd like to get this fixed before I pick up my wireless router Sunday.

Get the wireless router. It's probably better that way. This is because Routers usually come with an integrated DHCP server, which assigns IPs to each computer connected to it. At that point you should be able get the computers to talk to each other.
Personally, I find network settings with a router to be much simpler than with just a simple hub.

Networking computers causes my hair to fall out and me to stop liking people. I avoid it. Otherwise pain comes.
Also, this topic name has been done before. Think, next time, m'kay?

Yes, well, every time it's been done it's been done by me or Tahna, who got the idea from me. It's a running joke. And I don't believe I've used this EXACT one before, either. Note the reference to plural computers.

"Networking computers causes my hair to fall out..."
That, or the grungy grease you put in it.
Oh, and shouldn't the topic title be "My computers hate each other", rather? B)
