Hiya! It's me again! [Big Grin]

The other day while I was logged onto the Net, a porn dialer installed itself onto my PC - fucking cheek! After two hours of effort I managed to get it off and completely uninstalled (I think). I say "I think" because now when I dial up to the Net, my modem makes no sound - I don't hear the cool beeps as it dials the number - nothing!

I've checked the settings and they haven't changed. Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers!

Porn dialers often tamper with the volume settings to cover their tracks. Are you sure those haven't changed? I'd double-check the modem properties tab (under "modem" on the control panel) if I were you.

Posted by akb1979 (Member # 557) on :

Nope, already checked that. Other thoughts?

That you should get a cable modem?

j/k [Razz]

Does seem a little wierd though...

"...a porn dialer installed itself onto my PC.... After two hours of effort I managed to get it off..."

Hm...

"Other thoughts?"

Yes. On the connection tab, click the Advanced button, then see if the "extra settings" bar contains an "L0" or "M0" init string. If it does, remove them and reboot.

Failing that, start Internet Explorer, pull down the Tools menu, select Internet Options, click the Connections tab, then Settings, then Properties, and finally Configure. Mark the "enable modem speaker" box if it isn't already, then redial.

Failing THAT, do a format. B)

Although if your modem still connects just fine, you don't really need to hear the dialing sounds. Unless, of course, you're like me and need to here a certain sound to know if you're connected at optimal speed or not. [Smile]

Posted by akb1979 (Member # 557) on :

Topher - yes I like the sound as I can tell if I've connected properly.

Cartman - thanks, but the "enable modem speaker" box isn't there! [Frown]

TSN - wash your dirty mind out! [Big Grin] [Razz]

Do a screengrab and show it to us. (Press PRT SCR, and then paste the image into a paint package).

Also, when you say that you "think" you've gotten rid of the virus...have you actually run a, y'know, virus check?

Forgive my country-boy Canadian upbringing, but... Porn dialler?

Annoying .exe's that connect to expensive phone numbers, apparently enabling you to download the hottest 56k porn in the world.

Posted by akb1979 (Member # 557) on :

Thank you Harry - hit the nail on the head. [Smile]

PsyLiam - at what stage do you want a screen cap? When I get to the stage where I've pressed "configure" and it brings up a window with tabs headed General/Connection/Options/Distinctive Ring/Forwarding - or another stage? Oh yes, I have run a virus scan, numerous times. Viruses were found and promptly deleted/isolated. I've checked again and again and no other virus has appeared. What can I say? I've had shit luck with PCs from the day I owned one. I just want to keep this one alive a little bit longer until I can afford an upgrade or a completely new system.

Okaaay.

I've now tried everything that I know of to get my sound back. PsyLiam - if you answer my question in my last post I might be able to get you a screenshot.

Other than that - does anyone have ANY idea how to solve my problem that does not involve any of the following:

a) reformatting
b) kicking shit out of PC
c) taking a sledgehammer to PC
d) an other silly notion?

[Big Grin] [Razz]

Well, what HAVE you tried? And what OS do you have installed, again?

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Do this:

"Start Internet Explorer, pull down the Tools menu, select Internet Options, click the Connections tab, then Settings, then Properties, and finally Configure."

And then do a screen grab.

OK, still no joy with my modem sound [Frown]

Now got a new problem.

My work PC has speakers which I use for all the office and other software sounds. My boss used my log-in the last two days to use some software that he needed and that only I can use.

Got that? Good.

Now, after 15 minutes the little speaker icon in the taskbar turns to the "muted" one (red circle with a line though it). I can't stop this from happening!!!! [Mad] [Mad] The IT guy had no idea how to stop it, he went though all the audio & sound menus and couldn't determine why it suddenly appeared - do any of you guys and gals have a clue as it's really pissing me off now and hinders my work when I don't know that error messages have popped up! [Confused] [Frown]

Thanks in advance! [Smile]

What software did your boss use? What soundcard is in your workstation? And what rights does your log-in have?

But, erh, you do still have eyes with which you can SEE any error messages that pop up, don't you?

Posted by Toadkiller (Member # 425) on :

His eyes are busy looking at the results of the dialer on his home computer....

Posted by akb1979 (Member # 557) on :

OK, forget all that - found the problem.

The left CTRL key has been alloacted by my boss as a shortcut key to "mute" sound.

Question - HOW THE HELL DO I UNDO THIS AS IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!!! I can't listen to my music for more than a minute before I mute it out with cut & paste & stuff! [Frown] [Frown] HELP!!!!!!!!

(This is a Windows 2000 shortcut issue, not MS Office as those at work have tried to insist).

Yes I still have eyes, but prefer the sounds.

What's my home dialler got to do with this? [Big Grin] [Confused]

16:15: Oh yeah, how do I get F5 back to "refresh" on Internet Explorer?

16:27: It looks as though somehow my boss or the computer has changed the shortcut keys settings, assigning them to do other things. How can these Windows shortcuts be re-set to defaults or changed manually?

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

If they are Office shortcuts (which would be odd), you'll find them under Tools - Macro - Macros.

If they are Windows shortcuts, you'll find them under Control Panel - Accessibility Options - Keyboard. I think.

If they are third-party shortcuts (which I suspect), you'll have to tell me what programs your workstation executes on startup first.

Programmes in the task bar (not sure if that's what you mean) are:

Ranger v5.0.1.36
Ranger Remote Control Client
InterCheck
English (UK)
Print job billing (some funny program that give us a green pyramid)
The college's LAN
Volume
and occasionally the Windows Update (depending on whether the log-on process IDs me as Admin or not)

Not sure if that's any help. The college has been experiencing a real slow-down on speed and loads of people have had trouble sending e-mails externally. If the above doesn't answer your query, let me know more specifics (please bare in mind that I am limited in what I am authorised to access) and I'll see what I can come up with.

"Ranger Remote Control Client"

THAT's it! The shortcuts are there! Set your course for the Ranger system!

Actually, I don't think any of those are the culprit. Have you looked under Tools - Customize - Keyboard in Office yet?

And fer chrisake, get rid of those things running down there. Cluttered task bars annoy me no end.

I was suppossed to be fixing that modem sound thing, wasn't I?

*runs away*

Yes you where! [Mad] [Big Grin]

Didn't someone on Flare mention HDD probs? In that there was a click and then the drive was not recognised on bootup? I can't find the discussion on this anywhere (shows how crap my search keyword skills are! [Razz] ) but can anyone:

a) provide a link to the discussion or;

b) provide an answer to the prob?

I think the HDD is shagged - bad sectors & clusters everywhere. Guess that upgrade is gonna happen sooner than I had thought. Anyone like in or near to Ilkeston, Derbyshire who would be willing to help put the bits together for a cool drink and my undying gratitude? [Big Grin]

That was me. I don't feel like looking for it, but just lok for a topic started by me. There aren't many.

YAY! Now back on-line after upgrading my PC - 256MB AGP, 120 GB HDD, DVD-RW, 1 GB RAM - YAY!

Me be happy bunny!

But-but how will you be able to operate the monitor with all that white oyster marmalade covering it??? [Confused]

(don't take this post as a sign of me being jealous, I have come to tell you that you are far too removed from reality, in that case.)

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Okay, for the last time, classifying graphics cards by their memory is pointless, stupid, and daft. If you're going to brag, then mention the model, as that's the actual relevent bit.

Posted by akb1979 (Member # 557) on :

White oyster marmalade? Whaaat?

Model - GeForce FX5200 [Big Grin]

I'm not bragging or anything Nim/PsyLiam, just happy that I have it all! [Big Grin]

PsyLiam - is the model that I've bought good? I mean it will let me play Deus Ex: Invisible War, so I'm happy. [Big Grin] (Plus it's good to be back on the Internet after a week of absense!)

Posted by Nim the Fanciful (Member # 205) on :

Yes I pretended to be jealous, I would never begrudge you the happy feeling of being up to snough.

The FX-line is solid, you'll be able to use it for the upcoming 4rth-Gen games just around the corner, I'm sure of it.

Here's a funny. I tried the "No One Lives Forever 2" demo six months ago, and thought it OK. But now that I've seen the "Kill Bill" movies, I'm regarding the possibility to wield a Katana in "NOLF2" in a much more eager light. :-)=

My brother just returned from his month in Siam, he bought me Thai Fisherpants, a T-Shirt with "Black-Belt Jones" motif (the Jive guy from 'Enter The Dragon'), a copy of NOLF-2 and the asian, unmanipulated copy of "Kill Bill"!

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Nim's right. The FX-line is solid. AMD cards are better, pound for pound, but a 5200 is still better than what the majority have, and it more than powerful enough to play all current games without any problem.
