I'm in the market for a set of powered (that is, with built-in amplifier) speakers, ideally for a PC but could be plugged into a stereo earphone socket at a pinch. Something that I could plug into an iPod since our stereo system is on the other side of the world!
Can anyone recommend a good make/model, or features and specs to look out for? I'm not averse to small-scale surround-sound systems provided they put out a decent amount of power. I'm guessing that anything with a subwoofer generally requires a power source. . .

Hmm... do you want it to be portable?

It's not a major requirement, no. Just nothing too bulky otherwise we'd probably just get a pair of speakers and an amp!

I stick my erect penis into the big hole in the bottom of my harmon / kardon sub. It's good stuff.
The speakers are superb, too.

Altec Lansing is pretty good. But I don't think harmon/kardon intended their subwoofers to be used in such a way Ultra is describing.

He then plays his "Hum along with Harry" meddly.
But he is right the Harmon Kardons do sound great, a friend of mine has a set.

If you want the best shit in the world you should look at Bang&Olufsen, Sennheiser and stoff, I assumed you were looking for something moderately affordable.
And Surround-Sound for an IPod? Isn't this overkill? Are you going to be gracing "Saving Private Ryan" on the bus to Bagshot Row?
How about just "Creative", hm?

Especially the portable solutions might be nice.

I'm not looking for a surround-sound solution in particular. I just wanted a set of PC speakers of a decent quality (in terms of sound quality, and output) and most of the results I was finding in the kind of price range I envisaged seemed to involve surround sound.
