$1025 for repairs, including additional transmission issues.

Joy.

Is this an auto or a manual?

It's UM's favorite: a manny tranny!

Erm. Automatic transmissions don't usually have clutches...

You might want to drive your car a little better with this clutch. A new(ish) Celica shouldn't burn out a clutch that quickly. Hell, my 88 Ranger has the original clutch.

Posted by Mucus (Member # 24) on :

Maybe rogue deer sabotaged his transmission as revenge.

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

I haven't hit (thank goodness!) any deer in my Celica.

I do tend to ride the clutch.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

In British traffic, you get used to doing that. In fact, it was a major part of my control technique. I was actually quite worried about how I'd handle an automatic while in the US, without a clutch to affect my speed.

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

Was your trip to the US the first time you'd ever driven an automatic? Yeah, its amazing how many Americans just get an automatic without bothering to learn how to drive a manual. Sure it's tough at first, but it gets better the more practice you have.

OTOH, if I went to England, I think I'd stick with an auto rental just because trying to get used to driving on the opposite side of the street AND trying to shift with my left hand would probably cause me to wreck into (most likely) the only deer wandering around London.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

I was concerned about having to get used to both the wrong side of the road and an automatic, but a couple of turns around a McDonalds car park in southern Oregon soon sorted me out. I soon forgot about the automatic aspect once I found that I could control the car's speed just as well using the brakes; driving on the right took a little longer to get used to.

I stubbed my toe this morning.

I bent my Wookie.

Ahhhh changing gears with your left hand is not hard! [Big Grin]

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Normally I'd jsut assume that the innuendo was meant, but with Andrew it's anyone's guess.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

LOL! Actually it was quite innocent (this time) [Big Grin] heheheh

So... he broke his stick... for his manny tranny. What a shock.

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

Got it back this morning. Shifted into reverse ... let off the clutch ...

And the car just JUMPED back! I nearly wrecked it. New clutch'll take some getting used to, but it is nice to have the pep back. Last week that car could barely outdrive a turtle - today it'll outrun the Millennium fuckin' Falcon!

What's kept Liz from this thread all this time?
Is her legs pinned down under oversized home stereo equipment?

I need more to work with here!

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

How do you drive a manual transmission car?
I mean, in Florida, it requited to have your left elbow resting on the (rolled down) window...

My car tops out at 85 anyhow: nothing makes a Buick go faster (except possibly gravity on a down-ramp).

Posted by LOA (Member # 49) on :

Let me get this straight - your clutch went out ALREADY? Sweety, that takes more than just "riding the clutch", in my opinion. I am the WORST at driving a 5 speed (Charles will back me on this) and *I* haven't even had my clutch go out yet. And I've driven well over 70K miles on it. In stop and go traffic. Not ideal.

Yeesh.

And over $1K in repairs? I woulda traded the thing in. Oy.

Nim, give me a break... I missed the thread for like, oh, 24 HOURS... sooo sorry! I'm a busy girl, you know... working, working, going to school, working, talking on the phone, working, swooning.... all things that take my time away from me [Wink]

Also, I don't have a home stereo to get pinned under [Razz] And if you MUST know, I wasn't going to bring this up, but I spent most of last night at the car stereo shop. So if I'm pinned under anything, it's car audio [Wink] Though it's not a happy thing... my component amp blew. So now I have a temp amp and a temp install just to let me have music, but it's not the greatest deal. Pleh.

Anyway, yeah. Gotta go.... work calls!

Snay: TAKE A DRIVING CLASS! Don't ruin this clutch, too ;-)

Seventy thousand miles in one car?! I haven't driven seventy thousand miles in my entire life! Bloody Americans, they even drive to the bathroom. . .

Posted by Mucus (Member # 24) on :

*raises eyebrow*
We have a Toyota with 140K km and a Honda with 200K km on it. Thats roughly 80K and 124K miles...so thats really not out of the ordinary.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

How much driving do you do a day, then?

Posted by LOA (Member # 49) on :

*shrug* I drive a lot... that's what happens when you live in the sticks and have to drive across town for work, and then to another end of town for school, then back across town to get home again. Plus I like road trips. A lot. And I also like my stereo, so whenever I carpool with friends and stuff, I end up driving. 'Cause my car is the coolest. And I don't like leaving it places, so it goes with me. Just how it is.... [Smile]

Posted by Mucus (Member # 24) on :

Me, personally? Not one bit. I walk to the university campus as my commute. Both of the cars are family cars though, with daily commutes of roughly 1.5 hours with occasional 2.5 commutes....so between 150km (90 miles) and 250km (150 miles) per working day.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

So an hour's drive each way isn't considered unusual for commuting to work? Strange. I've done that occasionally, but not on a regular basis. If I got a job that was an hour away by car, I'd consider moving. Yet I wouldn't have a problem with an hour's train journey.

But, who knows? I'm moving back to the UK in six weeks and will be living in the West Country. Chances are I'll end up working in Swindon, which isn't a prospect I relish. That'll be about an hour each way.

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

When my mom returned her 3 year-old lease, it had a little over 90K km on it (56K mi). And my 88 Ranger has something along the lines of 220K km on it (137K mi).

Liz:

Trade it in? Are you kidding? I owe more on it then it's worth!

Lee:

If I lived near DC, or a city with a good public transportation system, I wouldn't HAVE to drive as much ... but do keep in mind that my job requires me to drive 60 hours a week.

Lee: You moved literally to the opposite side of the world, and now you're moving back after less than a year? Did you get bitten by a kiwi, or something?

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

I've put about 70,000 miles on my car in the (roughly) eight years I've had it. It's got about 110,000 on it in total.

(This reminds me that I need to change my oil and get a new air filter. And also put the inside of the driver's side doors back on, if I can find the right kind of plastic clips used to hold the plastic interior piece to the metal frame.)

(Well, actually, it doesn't, but it does provide me an excuse to contrast my hard country living in regards to automobile usage to y'all effete city folk.)

Posted by LOA (Member # 49) on :

Sol~

I drove my car around for a few weeks without any of the inside door panels... it was a nightmare, 'cause it was SOOOO cold outside, and there's pretty much no insulation in the thing once you take those off. Ick. I got a new stereo installer after that though, so I haven't had that problem since... this one is much more reliable.. and talented... and it doesn't TAKE him a few weeks to put in new speakers... which is a huge bonus in my world. [Razz]

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Oh, the panels are still there. They just aren't attached, in the technical sense of the word, and one must be gentle when opening or closing them.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

I take that back. Even the rear door, which has no little plastic clips at all, is still physically connected to the frame via the wiring for the window and the lock.

No more New Zealand? What were you doing there anyway? Next you'll be back to French-Guiana! [Big Grin]

Family reasons.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

"...and it doesn't TAKE him a few weeks to put in new speakers..."

A few weeks? Even a novice ought to be able to put speakers into a car within a few hours...

Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :

Do you know how long it takes just to solder the basic wiring together? Not to mention making a mold for a button interface? And painting on those little digits and tags like 'preset' or 'tune'?

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

And that's just for a normal driver, not one who's had restraining orders taken against her by Bose, Sony and Blaupunkt.

Posted by LOA (Member # 49) on :

TSN~ Well, it was a little more complex than just putting new speakers in.... he ran all new wiring through the car 'cause I wanted better stuff for the speakers... 12 gauge, I think.... and he was also soundproofing the car, so that takes time, too, but NOT several weeks. Maybe a few days, maybe, but weeks? Pleh.

As I said, I have a new installer. The first guy was free, but caused me stress. The new guy costs more, but causes me no stress. The world is a happy place [Smile]

Lee~ I have NO restraining orders against me, if that's what you are implying *L* In fact, take me into any stereo store in town, and they love me... it's like a party and stuff...! [Wink]

I can imagine. What is your opinion of Sony generally? We have something called an Xplod, plays CDs, CD-R Mp3s. . .

Posted by Nim (Member # 205) on :

LOA: "he ran all new wiring through the car 'cause I wanted better stuff for the speakers... 12 gauge, I think...."

Yeah I always use that too, I've heard reports of 10 gauge sometimes ricocheting off windshields.

As a general rule, I'd rather be dipped in poop than buy a Sony product. My first amp was a Sony. Sony Xplode, no less. And that's what it did. It exploded. Pleh.

Sony is one of two things - it's REALLY REALLY BAD, or it's REALLY REALLY GOOD. And the really really good stuff is the really really expensive stuff. Like, for example, the Sony CDX-M9905X. This is a REALLY cool piece, and a pretty cutting edge technology. But it's stickered at over $600. Ouch. At that point, you may as well go to a full out video unit with a DVD player and stuff....

I love car audio...

Charles, you're gonna get it next time I'm in Seattle. I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE.

Yes, yes it would [Razz]

And those pictures aren't even current... I mean, seriously.... they're like SOOOO out of date.

I'll have to update it now. Pleh. Website traffic sucks. It causes me more work. I'll update and get more pictures up this weekend.

Yuck.

Yes, and correct your spelling of 'camara' (sic) in one place. [Big Grin]
