Can anyone here reccomend a good program to convert divx files to VCDs (I think they use avi formats?).
Also anyone know a good program for converting mov files to a format suitable for VCD?
While I'm at it - what's a good program to capture stills from movies divx, avi etc.
What's a good program to extract the soundtrack to a divx/avi/mov/mpeg file?
Thanks,

VCDs use MPEG-1, not AVI. Conversion of .mov files is problematic. I'm not sure it's possible with free software, I've gotten the impression that the codec is for-pay only.

Yeah, .mov is Apple's jealously-guarded little Quicktime container format. You don't convert those (or rather, the proprietary Sorenson codec-encoded tracks inside them) without experiencing a MILD degree of discomfort.
(VCDs are not a problem for VD, though.)

Warning, though: if you're starting out with AVIs you've downloaded or something, I've found that VirtualDub is really picky about the audio data. It always tells me there's something wrong, and I have to go use a different program to re-encode the thing before VD will read the audio.

It doesn't like variable bitrates, mostly. Or AC3 codecs. For... some reason.

It also doesn't handle MPEG-1 directly, BTW, or didn't last I checked. You'll have to convert to that using another program, probably TMPGEnc. And you'll want a program to actually put it on a VCD. Nero can handle that. I personally use Proshow Gold, but that's because I have a licence.
