Well, not for another year or so - about this time '06. Before I do buy a place, I need to get my credit score up a bit more and do a better job of paying down some of my debts.
I've never purchased a home before, so, this is kind of scary. But! I pay $710 a month in rent, so I'm hoping I can afford a place in the mid-hundred grand range, although I'm hoping to get something cheaper.
I'm looking in the Baltimore City neighborhood of Remington, which is sandwiched between Hampden and Charles Village. The big selling point is that it's right off I-83, and that the super-gentrification has not yet occured (rowhomes in Hampden now sell for three times what they did five years ago).
I'm looking for a rowhome - in Baltimore, that means a width of from 9' to 16' feet (in Remington, most likely 13') and a depth anywhere from 45' to 60' feet. Rowhomes range from two-story structures with no basement to three-stories with a full basement.
The big thing I'm looking for is a parking pad at the rear of the rowhome. As parking is not always the easiest thing to find, the convenience of private parking is easy to understand. And, as I'm sure you can picture, the thought of not having a yard to keep cut is appealing.

Man....a house for "the mid-hundreds grand" range.
I wish. I pay $760 for a two bedroom apartment (that's considered extremely good), but houses in South Florids start in the 230's and go up from there.

I think I saw scenes from Homicide set outside all those kinds of houses. . .

My parents recently purchased a large bungalow on 1.5 acres of land for $107k CDN. And I thought that was pricy.
Of course, we had visitors up from South Florida (Ft. Lauderdale area) up over Christmas and they said the same size house (without a basement, natch) on the same amount of land in South Florida would run around $500k US...

Well, Homicide was filmed in Baltimore ... and Remington, so ...
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Cool: mabye you could get a house used in an episode. You could brag that "Michelle Forbes stood over there..."
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
That was my point. But wasn't it filmed in LA with about one day a month on location for outside shots, like everything else?

If you want more Baltimore than you can handle, watch The Wire on HBO.
And if you think real estate is expensive, try moving to Los Angeles.

Or San Francisco...
Posted by Mighty Blogger Snay (Member # 411) on :
No, Homicide was filmed full time in Baltimore, and many of the actors bought homes in Baltimore. The Wire is also filmed full time in Baltimore - they filmed some scenes from the 1st season here in Cockeysville, interestingly enough.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
You just made up "Cockeysville". Admit it.

I live about a mile down the road from that library.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
So they have "cockey" libraians there?
Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :
Yeah. You got a PROBLEM with that?
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
I wonder if they filmed Line of Fire in Richmond. Good show, that.

I recognize some of those areas from my last work week In Baltimore. I absolutely LOVE my house and since I travel for work, I can live anywhere. It's important to pay off debt and it can be done.
Best of luck.....

Well well well. For all you pommies out there...I have a great secret. I live no more than a 1 minute drive from the neighbours street.
I shall now hang my head in shame.

*speechless*
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
And you've kept this from us for the past eight years?!
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
I live walking distance to the beach and only 30 yards from a river.
'Cause, you know...water is good.
And stuff.
Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :
I want to see Harold!

"For all you pommies out there..."
And for the rest of us?

Free beer!
Posted by Daryus Aden (Member # 12) on :
Yes I have kept it from you. Its like the nuclear access codes. The fewer people that know, the better.
TSN - Now don't be a Crybaby. I just figured that since Neighbours didn't pose a major threat in terms of International Terrorism you guys would not have noticed it. My apologies. Here, have a Lolly.
This ones for Liam.

I don't get it. Doesn't everyone live a short drive from their neighbor's street?
Or is "neighbor's street" a secret codeword for "Travolta's S/M Gay Swingers' Sauna club/Casino"?
Posted by Wraith (Member # 779) on :
He means theNeighbours street.
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
Oh.
See, this is why I insist on things like capitalization...
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
Good God. That is way too much information about Neighbours. And, bloody hell, Paul Robinson is back on the show.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Australlians have television now?!?
Good god, what's next? The motorcar?
Posted by Daryus Aden (Member # 12) on :
Now fair go cobba. I've got roos for that sort of gallivantin'. Don't need any fancy-arse cars round these parts.
Strewth.
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
What's really worrying is, when I first re-registered here as Vogon Poet, I pretended to be Australian and spouted exactly that sort of nonsense, and everyone (except Daryus, who was in on the joke) fell for it!
Posted by Mighty Blogger Snay (Member # 411) on :
so, anyone bought a home before?
Posted by Jay the Obscure (Member # 19) on :
Yes.
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
I understood everything except "fair go cobba". No clue what that is.
Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :
"Fair go" could be taken as meaning "nice one," and "cobba" (or "cobber") means "mate."
Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :
Except that no-one (or at least, no-one normal) talks like that in Australia.
Anyway, I see your "I live really close to Ramsey Street" and I raise you one "I live off of Penny Lane".
Rule.

My brother and Samuel L. Jackson said "Yo!" to each other.
Trump!
Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :
But Samual L Jackson is not a place. Therefore he doesn't count. Keep your homie meetings to yourself, bro.
Posted by Daryus Aden (Member # 12) on :
Homie meetings or greetings?
Sup?!
Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :
Don't make me serve you.
Posted by Nim' (Member # 205) on :
Aw hell no, you didn't just?
Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :
I'm afraid so.

One would have thought the excitement of seeing Chesney on The Games would have wiped him out for weeks. . .
