I thought this was a Stargate thread.

Odd that they should give an asteroid that they say has a very low chance of hitting Earth a name that means "the destroyer".

The article doesn't really elaborate, but why is there a chance that it will hit Earth after it passes by? Will it pass by again whilst Earth is on the other side of its orbit in the following years?

Because, in passing, the asteroid's orbit around the sun will be unpredictably altered by the Earth's gravitational pull, which might lead to a collision when it intercepts our fair planet again (its orbit crosses that of the Earth twice).
