Anyone have any idea what kind of old hardware I could salvage a 100mhz crystal oscillator from? The only thing I've dug up in my basement so far that even has a crystal is an old ISA modem, and it's rated at 59mhz, so no go. I suppose I could buy one from mouser, but $3.75 for something I might have already?

Ok... you said hardware, and I thought maybe you meant, like, screws and bolts and things.
Nevermind.

Yep. Obviously that's illegal, so no. But yeah. I'm mostly curious whether or not I can make a tunable one with various ranges, dialing up from a few inches to a foot, to a foot and a half, etc. by means of a variable resistor between the crystal and the power supply...

So you are doing a feasibility study using extremely short ranges, such as a science project.
A clock or radio may have one, the radios may work better, being a variable frequency device already.

It would be a big help if he wasn't having to do this work with bear skins and stone knives.

Don't forget to equip this with a Jacob's Ladder, no self-respecting madman makes any electronic device without one.
