Physicist James A. Van Allen, a leader in space exploration who discovered the radiation belts surrounding the Earth that now bear his name, died Wednesday. He was 91.

Hey, we share a birthday. . .

I can never think of the Van Allen Belts without thinking of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, where they, er, catch fire and have to be extinguished by firing a nuclear missile at them!

Ah, yes: the glorious 1950's, where nuclear weapons fixed what ails ya!

91 is agood looong run: I honestly assumed Van Allen had dies decades ago.
His name will certainly live on.

The list of People Not Dead Yet often amazes. People like Marcel Marceau or, formerly, James Van Allen.
