NASA have lost the original moon landing tapes/film and the read-out data!

The conspiracy theorists will have a field day, most on the otherhand should be saddened by the thought. Hopefully they will turn up.

Didn't a guy make a doco using Brian Eno's music over images over film of the Apollo mission in the early 80's called "For All Mankind"?? He poured over km's worth of film.

A better story, also from Australia even, and this raises the important point that even if they found them, heck, even if some eager archivist was holding them right now, there's apparently only a single aging device on the whole planet that can read them.

You'd think someone would have transferred that to digital ages ago...

Still, the actual information is obviously not lost- even the conspiracy nuts have (for years) tons of copied footage made public through the National Archives.

Shitty that the original should be missing though- that stuff should have been in the Smithsonian.

quote:
Because NASA's equipment was not compatible with TV technology of the day, the original transmissions had to be displayed on a monitor and re-shot by a TV camera for broadcast.
Woah...that's crazy.
If the tape does turn up (almost certainly taken by some asshole as a souvineer), it would make for an incredible IMAX movie.
I'd by it on DVD. [Wink]

I'd create a huge cinema at home to view it.

Anyway look at this article:

Space.com article

Looks like Australians are hot on the trail... there are a number of links at the bottom of the page too.

"You'd think someone would have transferred that to digital ages ago..."

Or thought about it, anyway, since apparently no-one ever stopped to look for them since 1984.

Siegfried knows the truth:

Probably recorded over it with soft-core pornography...

It was one small step for man, but one giant leap to the unemployment line for the poor soul responsible. NASA cannot find the original tape recording of the Apollo 11 moon landing. They've spent over a year looking for it, but they can't find it.

"Honey, I can't find the original tape of the moon landing!"
"Did you look on the nightstand?"
"Yeah, it's not there."
"Did you look in your pockets?"
"Yes, it's the first place I looked!"
"Where did you leave it last?"
"If I knew that, I wouldn't be looking for it!"

A lonely NASA engineer, magnetic tape, and access to Cinemax? That's all it can be.

"Houston, the Eagle has landed."
zzzzzbt
"Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah."
"Oh, baby, yeah, that's it."
"See, Mort? I told you the moon landing was hot. Check out the crater on her."

I'll refrain from the graphic depiction of "asteroid impacts".
