So, my little sister is a space-FREAK! NASA is like her ultimate passion and calling in life - the girl wants to live on Mars and she'll do whatever it takes to get there!

NASA is currently holding a contest called "NASA's greatest Fan." In this contest, NASA fans created 30 second videos to talk about why they are the greatest fan NASA has ever had. My little sister is one of the 9 finalists, and now the winner will be decided by popular vote!

Please, please, please go to the following website and log some votes before voting closes on Friday.

http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/NASA_greatest_fan/index_noaccess.html

Her video is called "Mars Mates Forever" by Kayla.

She wants to win this so she can be a VIP at the next NASA space launch. This would be a dream come true for her, so please help her out! Thank you!!! [Smile]

"Mars Mates Forever" - I like the sound of that! Okay I've voted for your sister.

Your screen-name doesn't have anything to do with this, does it...?

I gotta run to the store real quick, but I'll vote for her when I get back. Meantime, ask her if she wants me to burn her a copy of my mission transcript CD -- Mercury through shuttles.

*looks around Flare* One of us should build this girl a nice Saturn V or ISS model. [Smile]

Still pissed, by the way, that I missed the glory days of Gemini and Apollo. In my Trek Chronology, I illustrate some early divergences by giving the Trek universe no Kennedy assassination, and the domino effect letting us have three more Apollo missions, and -- essentially -- the 2001: A Space Odyssey vision of the '90s. *sigh*

If she sets up a colony on Mars, I'd like to have a little talk with her first about societal natures.

I'm sure.

re this thing: neat, though I wish it was about how Mars is like a swan.

(Also, that song is powerful no good.)

Zefram Cochrane had the right idea -- "Magic Carpet Ride", baby! [Smile]

Or maybe some Holst...

Hell, even Enya's "Afer Ventus". Something about an evocative refrain of "Et itur ad astra".

I'll stick with Anjali's "Stinging Sitars", thanks.

I've done the semi-VIP at a launch thing before. The pilot of the launch I saw was a Georgia Tech alumni, and invited those of us in the GT AIAA chapter to come see it. Definitely something I won't ever forget, so I'll be glad to help someone else go see it!

Oh, and I also missed the Apollo days, but since I now live in Huntsville AL, I get to drive by a massive Saturn V rocket every day. [Big Grin]

Tell the truth, BJ. They launch with one of those little grey Estes controllers, don't they?

Thanks for voting, everyone! I know she really appreciates it :-)

I voted for her- her entry ws far beter than the dorky teacher's was.

Hmmm...something odd though- the site let me vote, then had me "exit", which returned me to the pre-voting screen. so I voted again.

Wiggy.

Thank you to everyone that voted for my sister!

She WON and will be going to the next NASA space launch with her best friend. They are TOTALLY stoked!

Congrats to her!!!!

I want a tile off the shuttle's heat shield- is that too much to ask?

Now you remember what happened the last time time you pried one of those off don't you Jason?

Also big congratulations to LOA's sister. As a frequest voter I insist there must be many photos snapped and uploaded. Also an essay or two.

Perhaps we might want to keep this on the QT lest they find out how rigged it was?

Don't worry I have some friends in the mob.

Oh please. I'd be suprised if everyone who entered *didn't* call on their entire school/family/online friends to vote for them.

I could say something here about rigged elections and Florida, but I won't...

Remind her to ask the astronauts how they go to the toilet. They love the question, and never tire of answering it.

Good stuff - hope she enjoys it. Did they release any info on how many votes cast (sniggers). Anyhew, I'll add my congrats to those above.

And envy. [Wink]

Double post.

Yes, they did release information on the votes....

There were 90K cast total, and she recieved 20K of them, making her the winner by a large margin. I'm really proud of her :-)

And as for the "rigging" of the contest, I'm pretty sure everyone told their friends and family to vote for them since right on the NASA site it said to "vote for your favorite and vote often" or something to that effect [Wink]
