Wow, I think that's a little harsh. The kid shouldn't have been smoking the ganja at that age, but to humiliate him on the internet? The father should be glad he wasn't doing crystal meth or selling crack to eight year olds.

From what I'm reading, the man didn't identify his son online. He's just identified as being from Canada. He shouldn't be smoking anything at all at that age...although I'm one to talk, I picked up cigarettes around his age. (But I quit.) Of course those are health reasons and I don't think punishing someone for ruining their own health will cause them to improve. But the main point is, he's still a kid living with his parents, and they have rules, and he broke both them and the law. Offering his Christmas present up on eBay probably made the kid feel like crap, yes, but my parents would've just called the police and turned me in. At least he just feels like crap instead of having a record.

He wouldn't get a record for smoking pot in Canada. They'd just take it away and give him a very stern lecture. Maybe take him to spend a day in the pen just to scare him a bit.

On the other hand, if he was smoking meth and selling crack to eight year olds it would be a whole other story...

Oh that's right, I forgot it was decriminalized.
